I don’t follow. Thurgood Marshall was a liberal and Clarence Thomas is a hardcore conservative. What was Rodney King’s role in his nomination? Thomas is arguably the most conservative judge on the bench today. He has consistently undermined democratic institutions, including the voting rights act. This guy doesn’t give a shit about black people.
When Marshall died, a juicy opportunity appeared for the Republicans and they took full advantage of it. A black supreme court judge died and naturally it made sense to replace him with another black judge. But the Republicans scoured the country for the most conservative one they could find, hence Clarence Thomas.
They were thrown in there to calm the (Black) masses following the mentioned events.
