Didn’t think it would be this soon…but…“Luweree luweree luwereeee

Tano tena!

Why would I board SGR at the same cost as Cost Bus or Mash Poa when it will need me other extra cost ya kunifikisha town centre while the same cost via buses itanipeleka Hadi city centre?!!! Miscalculations.

sgr=4hrs to mombasa mash cool=1600 6-8hrs to mombasa from miritini to mombasa=100bob.

We ni @Shida Tupu tu.

I predicted this just before the SGR started operations.
There is not one country in the world where high speed passenger railway transport is cheaper than road or air!
In Europe right now,it costs less to fly to most cities than it costs you to book a cab or uber to your final destination from the airport!
High speed long distance railway journeys in the UK are a reserve of wealthy business people.

Mark my words,in Kenya, you haven’t seen the final increase in prices.
By the time they are done,SGR itakuwa ya mababi pekee…

The construction of the second phase of Standard Gauge Railway from Nairobi to Naivasha will be completed in September next year.

The government had targeted to complete the construction on December 2019 but a review in the plans showed it will be completed three months before the set deadline.

“Both the rail and the special economic zone should be operational by the end of 2019,” Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said.

The 120-kilometre Nairobi-Naivasha line will cost the taxpayer Sh150 billion.

It connects to the recently completed stretch from Mombasa port to Nairobi.

The SGR is expected to eventually connect Nairobi to Kampala via Naivasha, Kisumu and Malaba.

MAASAI JOBS
In an interview with Nation in Mombasa, Prof Maringa said the recent chaos by the Maasai community will not affect the set timeline.

The community had staged protests demanding jobs from the mega project.

One person was shot dead on January 7 during the protests.

The victim was among a group of youth who tried to storm the construction site protesting that locals had not benefited from the project.

The ongoing construction had faced hitches as bad blood between the local community and the Chinese firm constructing the second phase threatened to boil over.

SKILLS
The early entry of the Chinese contractor at the SGR line before land owners were compensated caused friction with the local community, resulting in further delay of the endeavour.

However, the PS said the challenges occasioned by the demonstrations have led to serious engagements and networking with local political leadership in Kajiado and Narok counties.

“We have developed a consultative framework to ensure that locals feel they are an integral part of the SGR,” he said.

He cited lack of skills as a challenge hindering locals from being employed.

But he assured them that they would be trained and employed.

700bob and 3k were fixed by Uhuru for obvious reasons - an impending election.

CRBC had proposed a price of 4500 before the political price was fixed for the short term.

1200 for second class is fair. I wonder what MSA-KSM would cost once the whole rail is completed…

As someone said before… It doesnt really cost a lot considering the peace of mind from boarding a train

Luwere,luwere,luwere

Obviously you’ve never ridden a bus to Mombasa and gotten caught in the usual 2-day traffic jams. In any case, it’s a free country. Ride in a coach where you can go to the bathroom any time you want or buy a beer or sleep, or ride a bus. You’ll get there either way.

Time factor nigga…woiii

Akasema stima itakuwa cheap. Didn’t happen. Akasema maji ya turkana inakuja. Still waiting. Akasema 700 for sgr. Now this.
Na vile beverages na snacks on sgr ziko overpriced. Can’t they be happy with that extra money raised?

Hata unga ya gok itarudi bei ya zamani kama already haijarudi.

Hata sio high speed na wameanza ulafi. wameanza taking the customers good grace for granted. watashanga wakianza kubeba a few empty coaches.

They govt is just repeating the same mistake from years gone by. The Kenya govt. or any govt. for that matter does not make and has never made a good corporation or business entity.
Govts. are NOT GOOD at running large money generating enterprises. They just don’t have the talent pool!

The trick is for the Kenya govt to learn to let go and privatise.

Walijaribu kbs they floundered. Old railway, floundered. Nyayo DAF buses failed miserably. Ferry services, struggling. Kenya airways, oh my.

Kenya govt. patiana hizi vitu watu wajenge taifa nazo. Hata kplc it’s complaints every other day. In America for instance there are hundreds of private owned power companies and the customer is king. Liberalization is the mother of development.

In the U.S. one of the biggest railway companies BNSF is owned entirely by berkshire hathaway the investment firm. With the kind of talent Warren Buffet has personally and the people he can afford to employ, BNSF can only grow further.

They will subsidize the cost to save face.

As someone said, the train might lose passengers especially in these short distances. Hawangepitisha 1k.

They dont have a choice. The costs of the construction are beginning to bite. And elections have ended( at least contitutionally)

The issue is, charge 700 and have 100% or charge 1200 and have 50-60% capacity. Anyway, I wish them well.

Capacity will be higher. They have priced it competitively enough for passengers not to chose other means.
