Governor Susan Kihika Says She is on Maternity Leave

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has broken her silence after Kenyans questioned her whereabouts, demanding an explanation for why she had been missing in action.

In a letter dated January 17, and signed by Nakuru County Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya, the vocal governor explained that her absence was due to her being on maternity leave.

According to Kihika, she felt compelled to address the matter after receiving numerous phone calls from concerned Kenyans wanting to know why she had been out of the public eye.

“Following numerous calls that I have received regarding my absence, as the elected Governor of Nakuru County, I want to first of all assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave,” Kihika clarified.

Governor Kihika went ahead to assure the county residents that service delivery in Nakuru would go on seamlessly and that she would be out for only a few weeks.

To resolve the current leadership vacuum, Kihika announced that Nakuru Deputy Governor David Kones would oversee the running of the county.

“While thanking the people of Nakuru for their concern, I wholeheartedly assure them that service delivery in our Great County is proceeding as envisaged under the able guidance of the team led by the Deputy Governor, H E David Kones,” Kihika said.

“I have no doubts whatsoever in HE Kones leading them in my absence. I will be resuming official duties at the end of my leave in the next few weeks. God bless you all.”

The governor was forced to come out clear on the issue after a section of Kenyans alleged that she had reportedly travelled to the United States of America to deliver.

However, others purported that the governor’s decision to travel to the US was due to the fast-changing political atmosphere that required her to re-strategise ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Is Susan Kihika running Nakuru from the United States? What is wrong with the Kenya Kwanza government? is this their end goal,” questioned a concerned online user.

Meanwhile, before Kihika’s clarification, others alleged that the governor was reportedly operating a private law firm in the United States.

Millicent Omanga visits Governor Susan Kihika in the US

Residents of Nakuru County have filed a petition before the county assembly, demanding an immediate investigation into the whereabouts of Governor Susan Kihika.

The residents, in the petition submitted on Thursday afternoon, gave the county assembly two weeks to establish the reason for Kihika’s prolonged absence from office.

In the application signed by over 2,000 Nakuru residents, the locals also demanded an audit of all foreign travel by Nakuru County officials.

Additionally, the residents called on the county assembly to present a progress report on the investigations conducted into the disappearance of fisherman Brian Odhiambo, who reportedly went missing on January 18.

While addressing the press moments after submitting their petition, the locals accused the county chief of improper leadership adding that the in-house wrangles between the County Secretary and the Deputy Governor hindered development.

“The governor should choose between running her law firm in Texas, the United States and governing this city. The time for politicking will come but as for now, we demand accountability and transparency,” said a resident.

“Recently, we saw wrangles between the county Secretary and the Deputy Governor on who is running the county of Nakuru because of lack of proper leadership,” the resident added.

The demand letter comes about two months after Kihika released a statement explaining that her absence was due to her being on maternity leave.

In the letter dated January 17, and signed by Nakuru County Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya, the governor said she was compelled to address the matter after receiving numerous phone calls from concerned Kenyans.

“Following numerous calls that I have received regarding my absence, as the elected Governor of Nakuru County, I want to first of all assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave,” Kihika clarified.

“While thanking the people of Nakuru for their concern, I wholeheartedly assure them that service delivery in our Great County is proceeding as envisaged under the able guidance of the team led by Deputy Governor David Kones,” Kihika noted.

“I have no doubts whatsoever in Kones leading them in my absence. I will be resuming official duties at the end of my leave in the next few weeks. God bless you all.”

Trump Can’t Deport Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika…She’s American Citizen

Evans Kimori, a Kenyan citizen, has written to U.S. President Donald Trump seeking the deportation of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, whose prolonged absence has raised concerns about service delivery in Nakuru County.

According to Kimori, Kihika’s absence has created a leadership vacuum, affecting governance and public services in the devolved unit.

“Governor Kihika, elected in August 2022, has allegedly been seeking maternity and newborn medical attention in the USA for an extended period. While maternity leave is recognized under Kenyan law for up to 90 days, she has been absent for nearly five months, creating a leadership vacuum in Nakuru County,” reads part of Kimori’s letter.

The engineer further informed Trump that despite the governor’s travel abroad, Nakuru residents have been struggling to access medical services, particularly following the closure of War Memorial Hospital in the county.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika

“Her decision to seek medical services abroad comes after her administration ordered the closure of War Memorial Hospital, a critical public healthcare facility that has served Nakuru residents since 1906. This closure, despite numerous court orders mandating its reopening, has left thousands of residents, especially mothers, children, and patients with chronic illnesses, without essential healthcare,” Kimori added.

“While she enjoys advanced medical care in the U.S., the very people who elected her continue to suffer due to the collapse of local medical services under her leadership.”

Furthermore, Kimori urged Trump to intervene, arguing that Kihika’s prolonged absence has exacerbated the decline of critical services in Nakuru, amounting to neglect of her responsibilities despite her receiving a substantial salary.

“On behalf of the residents of Nakuru, I respectfully request your intervention in facilitating her return to Kenya so that she can resume her duties,” he implored.

“The people of Nakuru deserve accountable leadership, and her continued stay in the U.S. undermines the trust and democratic mandate placed on her by the electorate.”

Kihika, whose absence from the county has sparked much speculation, was recently captured in photos shared by a member of the Board of Directors of Kenya Shipyards Limited, Millicent Omanga, after she visited her in the U.S.

Additionally, the Governor has been facing legal battles in her county, ranging from county service management to environmental issues.

On February 18, the Environment and Land Court division ordered Kihika to serve a six-month jail term over contempt of a court order that had been issued to her.

The governor, alongside the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company Chief Executive Officer, was ordered to serve a six-month civil jail term or pay a Ksh2M fine for contempt over unlawful waste disposal into Lake Nakuru.

On March 20, residents of Nakuru County filed a petition before the county assembly, demanding an immediate investigation into the whereabouts of the Governor.

The residents, in their petition, gave the county assembly two weeks to establish the reason for Kihika’s prolonged absence from office.

Governor Kihika delivered twins in US, let her recuperate, women MPs urge

Women legislators have decried the increasing digital attacks and cyberbullying targeting female leaders, saying they infringe on their constitutional rights to privacy as mothers, wives, and private citizens.

On Tuesday, the women leaders rallied behind Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, calling on county residents and Kenyans at large to empathize with the county boss, who is recuperating in the United States after delivering twins.

Addressing the media at Parliament Buildings, they reiterated that women leaders are not exempt from natural processes such as childbirth and motherhood, and that no Kenyan woman should ever be forced to choose between being a leader and going through biological processes.

The women—Members of Parliament, Senators, and Women Representatives—implored Kenyans to exercise patience with the governor as she regains her health.

“As women leaders of Kenya, we stand here today in solidarity with Governor Susan Kihika, a dedicated public servant and a mother who has recently welcomed twins into the world. We congratulate her on the birth of her children. They are a blessing from God, and we give thanks,” stated the leaders in a joint statement.

“First and foremost, we wish to remind the public that childbirth is a natural, unique, and deeply personal process. As women leaders, we recognize the unique challenges that come with balancing public service and family responsibilities. The journey to motherhood brings immense joy but can also come with unforeseen medical complications requiring time for recovery and healing. Many women have gone through this, and Governor Kihika is no different.”

The legislators argued that motherhood does not pause leadership; rather, it enriches it through the diverse experiences and strengths women bring to the table.

“You can lead. You can be a mother. You can be both. And we will stand together to ensure that no woman is ever forced to choose between the two,” they stated.

The legislators—Nominated Senators Tabitha Mutinda, Hamida Kibwana, and Veronica Maina; Woman Representatives Cynthia Muge, and Betty Maina, as well as former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga—emphasized that women leaders are entitled to private lives, just as their male counterparts are.

They cited instances where male leaders, such as a former Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua, who later died in 2017 after a long illness, have been on extended leave for up to a year without attracting similar scrutiny or public attacks.

Ms Muge, the Nandi Woman Representative, reassured Nakuru residents that the county was running smoothly under the leadership of the deputy governor, whom Governor Kihika entrusted with leadership in her absence.

“She has discharged her duties, and she left a very able team to continue carrying out her constitutional responsibilities to the people of Nakuru. We appreciate the people of Nakuru—we tell them they did not make a wrong choice; they made the best choice, and you will see the results in due time,” she stated.

“To all women and girls: you can be both. You can be a governor, senator, woman representative, president, prime minister, cabinet secretary—you can be anything you ever dreamt of, and still be a mother.”

According to Ms Maina, the Murang’a Woman Representative, it has been a tempestuous journey for women leaders in Kenya, who are often scrutinized and chastised for reasons beyond their control.

“When a woman leader is unmarried or fails to have a child, she is ridiculed. When she gets married and is blessed with the gift of motherhood, it is still a problem. What do you want us to do?” posed Maina.

Ms Maina, the nominated senator, expressed concern that a section of Kenyans have resorted to abusing social media to bully and intimidate women leaders—some even “writing to the U.S. Embassy to deport Governor Kihika.”

“Governor Kihika has shown us you can be a leader and also have children because the law allows her. Nothing has gone wrong in Nakuru County. Kids are a blessing. Don’t you know in some countries, women are paid to have kids? Let’s give women a break.”

The legislators are demanding an end to gendered attacks on the Nakuru Governor and other women leaders, including respect for their constitutionally recognized right to maternity leave without political bullying.

They have called for a “fair political environment where leadership is judged by performance and integrity—not gender or motherhood.”

Word On The Street:

The Governor of Nakuru has not given birth. She was never pregnant.

The story of pregnancy and delivery of twins in the USA was concocted by her close relatives because the governor is critically unwell and receiving intensive treatment in America.

The relatives who were not part of the script were really shocked to hear she had given birth but were quickly silenced with the truth to keep up the narrative. That’s the truth.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei on Sunday, March 30, issued an update on the ailing Mosop Constituency Member of Parliament Abraham Kirwa.

In a statement on social media, Cherargei revealed that he had visited MP Kirwa at his home in Dallas, United States, and that he was recuperating well.

He further added that the MP would be back in the country to serve his constituents in a few months.

“I had an opportunity to pray and break bread with Hon. Abraham Kirwa Mp Mosop constituency and his family as he recuperates back to full health in Dallas, USA,” he stated.

“Mweshimiwa Kirwa is on his way to full recovery, on high spirits, and in a couple of months he shall be back to discharge his normal duties to the great people of Mosop constituency, Nandi county.”

He ended his statement by thanking Mosop resident and Kenyans in general for their prayers, support, and messages of goodwill for the MP.

Cherargei’s visit comes just a week after newly instated Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok visited the MP during a duty tour to the US on March 27.

Taking to social media, Bitok also relayed that the MP was experiencing a steady recovery.

“While on my official tour of the USA, I visited Hon. Abraham Kirwa, MP for Mosop, at his home in Dallas, Texas. I was pleased to see his progress and wished him a speedy recovery and God’s blessing,” PS Bitok stated.

The actual illness the MP is recovering from has yet to be confirmed to the public as of the time of publishing of this article.

MP Kirwa is the second Kenyan elected leader believed to be currently in Texas on health-related issues after it was Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika was reported to be on her maternity leave in the same US state.

Her extended leave has elicited criticism and support in equal measure, culminating in a petition to US President Donald Trump to have her deported.

Who Is She…And Why Is She There?

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and her husband, Sam Mburu, on Friday, April 11, unveiled photos of their newborn twins in a heartwarming family portrait.

Governor Kihika has been in the United States on maternity leave, despite still holding office as Nakuru County boss — a situation that had sparked speculation regarding the motive behind her extended stay abroad.

However, in a recently uploaded picture, Kihika seemingly put the rumours to rest by revealing the identity of her newborns. In the touching image that has since circulated widely online, the couple is seen beaming with pride as they pose with their adorable twins.

The photo captures Kihika seated in a cosy beige armchair, radiant in a white blouse, cradling the twins on her lap. Standing beside her is her husband, Mburu, dressed in a blue patterned shirt and white trousers, gently holding the arm of the chair.

In the wake of the photo circulating on social media, various leaders took the opportunity to extend their congratulations to Governor Kihika and her family. Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi conveyed his best wishes to Mburu and his wife, expressing hopes for a bright future for the young family.

Dennis Itumbi, a close aide to President William Ruto, also joined in the celebrations, expressing joy at the birth of the twins and wishing the couple abundant blessings in the journey ahead.

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai added his voice to the chorus of goodwill: “Congratulations, Governor Susan Kihika and my brother and friend Sam Mburu, on the joyful arrival of your twins! Wishing your family endless love and happiness,” he wrote.

Governor Kihika’s absence from active county leadership has sparked debate, with some questioning how a sitting governor could remain away from official duties for such an extended period. Nonetheless, Kihika had earlier reassured the public that Nakuru County’s affairs were running smoothly under the stewardship of Deputy Governor David Kones.

Before her clarification that she was in the United States on maternity leave, speculation had swirled, with some alleging her absence was linked to business or political engagements. Others, however, had correctly guessed she had travelled to the US for the delivery of her children.

Others had purported that the governor’s decision to travel to the US was due to the fast-changing political atmosphere that required her to re-strategise ahead of the 2027 elections.

Another section of netizens had alleged that the governor was reportedly operating a private law firm in the United States.

Her prolonged absence prompted Evans Kimori, a Kenyan citizen, to write to U.S. President Donald Trump seeking the deportation of Kihika, expressing concerns about service delivery in Nakuru County.

According to Kimori, Kihika’s absence has created a leadership vacuum, affecting governance and public services in the devolved unit.

Nakuru businessman Sam Mburu got engaged to Nakuru governor Susan Kihika in a colourful ceremony in Laikipia in November 2020.

Mburu began his business empire as a soft drinks distributor in Solai, Nakuru. Mburu’s parents sold charcoal, and this inspired him to venture into business.

The dowry negotiations ceremony was graced by President-elect William Ruto. Mburu is a close ally of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader. Mburu and Kihika reportedly met during the 2013 General Election after the politician jetted back to Kenya after a 20-year stay in the United States (US). The youthful businessman helped Kihika bag the Nakuru senatorial seat in the 2017 General Election by bankrolling her campaigns.

Businesses and properties owned by Mburu

  1. Landmark Freight Services Mburu is the director of Landmark Freight Services, which operates in Mombasa with branches in China. According to a report by Who Owns Kenya, the company earns over KSh 10 million in revenue monthly.

  2. Flats in Kitengela The businessman has invested in the real estate sector by developing houses for sale and rent in Kitengela. He owns 62 residential flats in the town, which is one of the fastest growing in Kenya.

  3. Rental flats in Embakasi With the Nairobi population increasing rapidly, leading to high housing demand, Mburu invested in the capital city. He owns over 43 flats located along Embakasi’s Airport North Road.

  4. Rental houses in Nakuru Nakuru is the largest urban centre in the Rift Valley region, with a population of over half a million inhabitants. Kihika’s husband has 15 rental houses in Kenya’s fourth city.

  5. Luxury cars: Mburu drives over six multi-million luxury cars.

Mburu was married to Beatrice Wanjiku. The duo tied the knot in 2003 and was blessed with two children. After they parted ways, Wanjiku demanded that Mburu gives her a month maintenance allowance of KSh 757,000.

In documents presented in court, she said that the businessman had set a high standard of life for them, and as such, he had to provide for her and their children.

“I have been part and parcel of my husband’s wealth. Until the year 2010, I had a steady job as a personal assistant to the managing director of the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries and taking home a package of KSh130,000. My husband persuaded me to leave my job and run the business of selling electrical goods in a shop along River Road," she said.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika is finally back in the country after spending over five months in the US.

The Governor, whose absenteeism sparked controversies among county members, on Friday, April 25, shared photos of friends and family at her home.

Kihika, who welcomed her twin sons while in the US, hosted colleagues who she said had come to officially welcome her and the children back home.

“Truly blessed and overwhelmed with gratitude. I was deeply humbled and honored to receive a warm visit from my dear friends who came to welcome me home and celebrate the arrival of my twin babies,” said Kihika in a post on Facebook.

“Your love, prayers, and presence mean the world to me and my family. Thank you for standing with me in this special season of double blessings,‘’ Kihika added.

The Governor had faced criticism for her prolonged absence from public duties, reportedly lasting nearly five months.

While she cited maternity leave as the reason, several residents questioned the extended duration, especially since Kenyan law allows for up to 90 days.

Following her prolonged stay, concerns were raised about the leadership vacuum she had left, with residents of Nakuru petitioning the County Assembly for clarity on governance during her absence.

The matter of her absence escalated to the extent where a citizen, Evans Kimori, wrote to US President Donald Trump, requesting her deportation back to Kenya.

Kimori argued that her absence had disrupted essential services in Nakuru, highlighting issues like the closure of War Memorial Hospital.

“On behalf of the residents of Nakuru, I respectfully request your intervention in facilitating her return to Kenya so that she can resume her duties,” read part of Kimori’s letter to Trump.

“The people of Nakuru deserve accountable leadership, and her continued stay in the U.S. undermines the trust and democratic mandate placed on her by the electorate,” the letter continued.

During her stay in the US, Kihika continually posted updates about Nakuru’s development. Women leaders in Kenya also defended Kihika’s stay, condemning the criticism as gender-based attacks and affirming her right to maternity leave.

Moses Kuria, Millicent Omanga, Beatrice Elachi, and leaders from KEWOPA were among the leaders who welcomed Kihika.
