If still in doubt,go ahead and do TPHA. It is the confirmatory test for syphilis. You can have negative VDRL but TPHA positive though rare.
You need a full STI panel. You might not have syphilis but you might have Chancroid or gonorhea or something else. Some STIs if not diagnosed early can cause brain damage.
