The theory of evolution is self evident. its not a story. However, there are usually very many gaps when it comes to emergence of individual species. For example, humans have very little variation among themselves. even on seperate continents, no human subspecies exist. only abnormalities such as albinism separate people. The other problem is that most human ancestors do not have a direct link to us. For example, if a lion survives 20 million years and the domestic cat dies out in a million years, it is easy to mistake the fossil of a 2019 domestic cat to be an ancestor of a lion living 20 million years from now, given that older cat fossils survives due to their numbers and geographical range. if the earliest fossil of a lion they can find seems to be younger than the cat fossil, they will conclude that lions emerged after cats. however, we living in that time know that domestic cats and lions exist at the same time. this is just an illustration.
using the principles of evolution, nothing prevents humans from being ancestors of all apes that have ever lived. maybe monkeys are degenerate forms of humans that found forests better than caves and huts.

For example there is archaeological evidence linking us to chimps more or less. But how do you link us to a worm that lived in the ocean 500million yrs back?

I disagree. Evolution was a theory famously postulated by Darwin after he visited the Galapagos Island. He found many interesting examples of evolution there but the most striking of all was the Galapagos Finch. This bird had evolved into several different varieties each of which survived in different ways but it was clearly evident that they were alll finches.
The church is the organization known to have tried to suppress science over the ages. They infamously put Galileo under house arrest for stating the earth is round.
