The Construction of the SGR in Tanzania from Tanga Port to Musoma Port Is a Threat to Kenyans

When President Samia Suluhu Hassan opened the 13th Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania on 14 November 2025, she delivered a message that should command the attention of policymakers, economists, and business leaders across East Africa.
In her national address, she announced a five-year plan to commence construction of an ambitious Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) stretching from Tanga Port on the Indian Ocean to Musoma Port on Lake Victoria.

For Tanzania, this marks the beginning of a new era of economic assertiveness.
For Kenya, it signals a strategic challenge with potentially far-reaching consequences.

Tanzania Is Advancing With Full Speed and a Clear Vision

Unlike previous regional infrastructure plans that stalled or drifted into political rhetoric, Tanzania is approaching this project with unusual clarity, urgency, and coherence.
The Tanga–Musoma SGR is not an isolated undertaking; it is part of a larger, well-coordinated national logistics agenda, which includes:

  • The Central Corridor modernization
  • Advanced work on the Dar es Salaam–Mwanza SGR
  • Expansion of dry ports across the country
  • Strengthening of Tanga Port’s deep-water capabilities
  • Strategic investments on Lake Victoria to boost maritime connectivity

Combined, these initiatives show a country that is building a seamless logistics ecosystem, not merely a railway line.

Musoma Port: The Game-Changer

Musoma’s strategic advantage is its direct connection to Port Bell in Uganda via Lake Victoria.
This means cargo arriving in Tanga can reach Uganda without touching Kenyan soil.

This shift would:

  • Reduce Uganda’s dependency on Mombasa
  • Bypass Kenyan tolls and road networks
  • Disrupt long-established trucking routes
  • Reconfigure East African supply chains

Simply put:
Tanzania is positioning itself to become the Great Lakes region’s preferred logistics partner.

A Regional Shift in Motion

Tanzania is moving with full speed, full seriousness, and full coordination.
The Tanga–Musoma SGR is more than a railway; it is a symbol of a country rapidly asserting itself as a logistics and economic powerhouse.

For Kenya, the threat is real — not because Tanzania is rising, but because it is rising strategically, decisively, and faster than many expected.

If Kenya does not act with equal determination, the regional balance of trade influence may tilt south — permanently.
