Mostly, when these ancient site are rediscovered, they are over grown and covered with soil and vegetation, at times they are mistaken for geographical features.
A humongous pyramid like, if over grown by trees and other vegatation will be very hard to identify from ground level
How is it that every society from all continents except,but not verified, Australia,have pyramids yet some countries are so far apart over water and the structures share similarities? E.T is the culprit
