The Concubine is set in the Igbo village of Omokachi in pre-colonial times and centers around Ihuoma who is the most beautiful girl in the village. Not only is Ihuoma beautiful, she is also described as being near “perfect”. She is admired and respected by many in the village. The story begins with Ihuoma losing her husband. Emenike is killed during a fight with Madume—one of Ihuoma’s admirers. After the death of her husband, Ihuoma is completely devastated and heartbroken.

Interesting read for anyone with a passion for African literature.

For those of you who went through KCSE in the mid 90’s, am sure you are with me on this.
