Shifting Gears

Ever since I owned my first vehicle, I was always inclined to driving manual transmission because I still like being engaged while driving. Last week I watched a short instructional video on how to shift and I realized I’ve been doing it all wrong. The manual is very technical and you have to figure out when is the best time to shift. I always shifted when I felt the need to but one rule of thumb of shifting is you only need to use your fingers to engage gears, any more force than that and you’re doing it wrong and this will shorten the life of your transmission.
The lower gears are the most important to pay attention to and I’ve realized I can only engage 1st when completely stationary and 2nd when at speeds below 20kph. Gear shifts are smooth and effortless.
Next time you drive, see if you can find the sweet spot for each gear.

You should add that you need some skill in rev matching to achieve this.

Hill start bila handbrake, hill climb downshifting, kupita kwa matope among others are things I learnt first hand growing up in shags driving pick ups and lorries.
