. . There is a supermarket in Ukunda, Diani in Kwale County called Samrat Supermarket, owned by Indian nationals.
(1) No off days, employees work from Monday to Monday without rest.
(2) No annual leave of any kind is provided.
(3) No overtime pay, despite working extremely long hours (8 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
(4) The only time an employee is given a day off is when they are seriously ill.
(5) If someone asks for time off to attend to personal matters, they are immediately dismissed and accused of being lazy.
(6) The salary is only Ksh 10,000, with no contract or formal employment agreement.
10k is generous. I used to pay them 7k. Supermarket margins are negligible coz of rent and fucking VAT. Can’t be helped. A lot of that money collected by the state could have easily doubled their wages and then some. We’ve taxed ourselves into misery.
This reminds me of a Samrat in Nyeri during Kibaki era sijui kama ni same owners.
Watu wa Jua Kali we work everyday na hatucomplain. The only problem is not getting paid, otherwise kama hiyo ni kidogo you can always look for a ‘better’ job.
Ni 10k before ikatwe vitu za upuzi eti kukuja late, missing stock, broken stuff etc. They end up with 4k end month.
We should not justify this kind of slavery eti small margins and overtaxations.
FMCGs retail na vyenye Iko na thin margins unasema kuwa late, kuiba stock na kuvunja inventory ni small things.A 2L stolen cooking oil bottle ni loss of more than a dozen similar sold bottles profit plus loss of principal amount.
In my work 50% of my success is showing up on time.
Then why go to the extremes of letting them work 77hours per week? Having a worn out staff is the first recipe to disaster. Small issues won’t be paid attention to. You will spend your time solving very petty cases arising from negligence from demotivated workers, then you end up in a continuous cycle of hiring and firing, when will you have time to think of expansion? Just run it with your wife and sons if you can’t manage workers.
I hear goods zikikaribia expiry wanapewa bure ![]()
