SAFARICOM STARTS MASKING PHONE NUMBERS IN MPESA MESSAGES

Starting March 24, 2026, Safaricom began implementing a privacy feature that masks customer phone numbers in M-PESA transaction SMS

Key Changes to M-PESA Notifications:

Masked Phone Numbers: SMS alerts for M-PESA transactions will show partially hidden phone numbers, such as 0722XXXXXX or 0722***000.
Limited Identifiers: Only two names of the recipient/sender will be displayed instead of the full identification details.
Scope: The new policy applies to P2P (person-to-person) transfers, as well as transactions involving Till Numbers and Paybill Numbers
What Remains:** Transaction details such as the amount, date, and reference number will remain visible to ensure transaction confirmation is still possible.

Rationale for the Change:

Data Minimisation:The initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure only necessary information is shared, mitigating the risk of data misuse.
Enhanced Security:Safaricom aims to reduce incidences of targeted fraud and harassment by concealing user details.
Policy Continuity:This follows previous privacy measures like masking numbers on M-Pesa statements and strengthening internal data access controls.
