Singer Teena Marie rose to fame in the 1970s with her distinctive vocals. Dubbed the Ivory Queen of Soul, she rapidly established herself as a prominent force in America’s R&B and soul music scene after being discovered by Berry Gordy, head of Motown Records, who signed her as a solo artist.

However, years later, Teena suffered a tragic accident whilst sleeping in a hotel room. A heavy picture frame fell and struck her head, resulting in a serious concussion that would cause occasional seizures for the remainder of her life. The artist passed away on Boxing Day in 2010.

Now, new tributes are being paid to Teena ahead of a concert honoring her memory on what would have been her 70th birthday. Remembering Teena Marie will take place on Thursday, March 5 at London’s 229 venue on Great Portland Street, featuring Sulene Fleming and The Square Biz Band performing Teena’s greatest hits and beloved tracks.
