Moving away from 2017 elections......fostering national unity and strenthening democracy in the 254.

Thank you kenyans as you continue to exercise peace, restraint and patiently wait for the IEBC the constitutionaly mandated body to run elections to conduct it work. I was among the first other than @spear to call the election as early as wednesday morning, all others were still predicting including @gashwin @FieldMarshal CouchP @Okwonkwo others like @Meria Mata were awol(import tings). I continue to fully congratulate president elect HE Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta on his re-election While equally prevailing on his Rt hon retired prime minister Raila Amolo Odinga to accept the will of the people and conceed. Going to the supreme court will not help matters but just delay the inevitable and plunging the country into uncertainity.

fellow kenyans the purpose of this thread is to discuss the lesson learnt from the elections and previous electoral cycles, what can be done to improve it, mistakes that various camps did and their strengths, political parties and their roles, the impact of the “indepent” parties, Integrity etc. I want us to discuss soberly and objectively without stroking emotions. Team RWNBP and UOTP put down your goggles and lets engage intellectually … I will go first here are my observations/ Recommendations

  1. The elections were free, fair ,just, verifiable and credible and for that we thank RAO and many court cases he had(this are some of the legacies he needs to protect by conceeding) if KIEMS platform is properly protected then the will of the people will never be subverted again.

  2. That the voter turnout was around 80+ and this being august is testament to the belief of kenyans in the electoral process. If the elections were to be held in the traditional December I strongly beleive we would hit 90
+. You see many kenyans (especially from the western part of the country choose to vote in rural areas hence when they travel to festivities they couple it with voting) thus killing two stones with one stone. In august many chose not to travel sparing the few resources for december and those that travelled wont be going back for christmas and this undid RAO proper!

  3. I have been on record as saying that kenya needs to have not more than 4 political parties, we have many briefcase parties with no clear cut agenda but serve selfish intrests, here I congratulate jubilee for wounding up many small parties and forming a formidable force that for once have seats in western kenya! Restructure the political parties act and give it teeth to act and prevent political party switching at will including several days to the election. Independent candidates should cease being members of parties two years to the election.

  4. Elections in kenya are simply a census/arithmetic of ethnic tribes in kenya we need a full inclusive hence it disenfranchises minor tribes like the ogiek/nubians who will never rise to the highest political office on land. How can we cure this is open to discussion.

  5. Women have proven they have “balls” to go at it just like men its time to scrap all nominated/ special seats and let them square with men by creating an environment good and level playing ground its time to do away with affirmative action.

  6. A constitutional review is required to ammend among others the following:
------Reduce presidential term from 5yrs to 4 yrs
------All constituttional office holders to have a non renewable contracts of four years, full security of tenure, the commisioners to be a minimum of 5 and maximum of 9, 7 of them being full time while 2 being part time.
------Scrapping the seats of women representatives and senators
------Amalgamating counties to have a max of 17
------Reducing members of parliament to a max of 270
    ------Scrapping anything nominated
------All elected positions to have a four year stint and a max of two terms this ensures a high turnover of leaders.

  7. Finally how did jubilee win the elections its plain simple
    a) Ensure a minimum 98% voter turn out in the stronghold and 97% voting for kamwana
    b) add atleast 15% to the areas previously they scored poorly like western
    c) Ensure 50% score in the battlegrounds like kisii, nairobi
    d) headstart of the incumbency and huge money war chest
    e) Effective mobilisation of the grassroots
    f) Kiambu !!! this county is nuts it neutralizes wetern and coast and you still have pocket change!

  8. The supreme court will never ever overturn a presidential election in kenya in the next 50 years no matter how overwhelming the effidence is so NASA spare us the agony.

  9. Finally the dynasty wars are over in kenya. This political families have literally hold kenya at ransom its a happy thing to see them end . I think the next dynasty itakua ni WSR na GM. Whether the central community will “return the hand” to the kalenjin community is subject to discussion.

  10. Time to heal kenya elections should never be a matter of life and death…LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC

wow! a nice discussion topic.

What I would like to see going forward is respect to institutions.

We cannot continue this shenanigan of trash talking independent institutions if they do something that does not favour the political players.

I have learnt in Jubilee, Cendro, for you to be elected, you have to be on the ground and be felt by Wanjiku. Mwangi wa iria is a force to reckon in 021.Kangata’s star is the rise. Be on the ground.

hapo tuko pamoja.

and Wainaina wa Jungle in Thika. The dude worked tirelessly for a period of time, putting up sheds fro bodaboda, streetlights etc. Alice Nganga came on the ground early this year from a slumber of 4 years, she’s been ferked up!

I agree with 90% of what you have said officer.

Salut!

we will have election years sooner than required. we don’t need election panic every now and then

chiefs be in that list

Hakuna PC’s.

this must happen, otherwise we as Kikuyu will be in real shit that time.

Chief’s play an important role in the society, you will never know this unless you live and work away from Nairobi. In my line of work, I have used the services of the chief’s to contact individuals coming from their areas. There is a case in point where I needed to contact a mzee and I tried severally using the address in our database to no avail. I contacted the chief of the area listed on his ID (Lunga Lunga huko interior) and he in turn contacted wazee wa kijiji to seek out the man. That @byro is how they can be of immense help.

Maybe we can consider going the electoral college way like USA?
@Duke of Busia discussed it here

Siwes soma hii yote aki…

Interesting read.
But I prefer the presidency term be a one-off term of 8 years.
But from the governors downwards be a two term tenure of 5 years each. We need to completely separate these two elections since its inconveniencing the economy and a bit too expensive.

Good to know bro.

venye @imei2012 alisema

Since elections are now an ethnic census it follows that we’ll only have a good government if Kikuyus decide to vote a good government. Hiyo ingine yote ni ndreams.

Hapo umetaja Ogiek & Nubians umekosea. The correct examples are Taita/Kisii/Borana… ; populous enough to somewhat matter in the totals but one of their own will never see State House

Agreed.
President apewe one term of 8yrs.
Scrap the Senate, any nominated member and reduce counties.

this copy pasting everything from states is really screwing us big time…from president with no powers to bloated governing seats. I feel we first need to amend the current constitution first.

I havent read all this…but i love my country and i want everything to go back to normal…
