Dr Wenwa Akinyi Odinga who is ODM leader Raila Odinga’s sister has been appointed to be a board member of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). In a gazette notice released on May 21, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe selected Dr Akinyi to sit the board for a period of three years.

Also appointed are Prof Timothy Mwololo, Dr George Njoroge and Marstella Bahati Kahindi with the appointment taking effect from May 17, 2021.

According to a 2015 Nation interview, Wenwa was the first Kenyan woman to obtain a doctorate degree in chemistry.
She is also a Trustee, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation and the Pan Africa Petroleum Limited.

Dr Akinyi has also worked as a senior assistant secretary for the Commission for University Education and a chief chemist at the Pyrethrum Board of Kenya. She has served as a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi for over 13 years.
Wenwa and her sister Beryl Odinga, schooled with two of Uhuru’s sisters, Kristina Pratt and Jenny Wamboi at The Kenya High School.
KEMRI has had changes in its management with the appointment of Prof. Sam Kariuki as the Acting DG in March 2021.
Prof. Kariuki replaced Prof Kombe who had served the institute for over 30 years and had been the DG for the last 3 years.
KEMRI is a state corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979. The Institute currently ranks as one of the leading Centres of excellence in health research both in Africa as well as globally.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s house in Jerusalem, Nairobi house has been marked for demolition by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) under Director General Mohamed Badi.Kenya’s first Vice President lived in the estate alongside former Presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki, top government officials and civil servants. Jerusalem estate in Eastlands, Nairobi has over 2,000 houses. NMS outlined plans to destroy the estate to construct nearly 60,000 affordable apartments under its Improvement Programme Eastland Urban Renewal Plan.

Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, is reported to be fond of the house and often passes by to visit his kins and to share a meal.
Evelyne Awino Ogola, Jaramogi’s granddaughter told K24 TV that the one storey flat house has been their home for years and their relatives treat it as a rural home or Nairobi’s ‘up-country’.

Petitions to gazette the famous estate as a national monument to save it from NMS bulldozers have attracted nationwide support, forcing the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) to intervene on behalf of the residents. NMK and NMS are in discussion over salvaging the estate only if it meets the criteria stipulated for historical monuments.
NMS built low-cost houses in Ngara and Pangani which were offered to buyers and tenants at affordable prices. Out of 1,562 housing units developed in the Pangani estate, 60 percent were sold at prices ranging from Ksh1 million to Ksh3 million for one-bedroom to three-bedroom units.
The other 40 percent will be sold at between Ksh7.5 million and Ksh15 million.
Other estates that are under redevelopment are Jeevanjee/Bachelors Quarters, Ngong Road Phases I and II, Uhuru Estate, New Ngara, Old Ngara and Suna Road.

I just don’t understand, she was appointed alongside 3 other candidates but you conviniently picked her from the group.

I think she’s qualified for the job by far and her achievements speak for themselves. It was just an added advantage she comes from royalty.
