The Nairobi County Government and matatu stakeholders have reportedly agreed on a proposal to have only two matatus at a time, picking and dropping passengers inside the Central Business District (CBD).
The meeting led by Nairobi Deputy Governor
Jonathan Mueke resolved that while two matatus head to pick passengers in town, the rest will remain at waiting points outside the CBD.
Among the areas suggested to be used as waiting terminus are Muthurwa, Globe roundabout and Ngara.
“This measure is aimed at easing congestion as others line and wait for their turn. It will also ensure that every matatu has a shot at entering the CBD indiscriminately,” Mueke said.
The meeting attended by officials from the Matatu Owners Association, Matatu Welfare Association and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) came to this agreement after PSV operators threatened to go on strike following Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero’s threat to remove all matatus from the city centre.
Kidero had ordered the cancellation of parking licenses of all public service vehicles within the CBD. Mueke announced that a new committee, Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority (NaMETA), would be formed to oversee implementation of the new policies.
Mr Mueke also stated that they would be verifying parking permits as most vehicles are operating using fake permits. He also said there were plans to build a new terminus outside the CBD to help in the de-congestion process.
2 matatus per route? or just 2 matatus?
Recipe for chaos.
The problem of congestion in Nairobi is mostly because of personal cars, everybody who owns a vehicle wants to drive it to work unapata mtu akipata pesa kidogo anakimbia kununua mtumba za Japan, instead of banning matatus the county government should raise parking fees in the cbd, or have car parks outside the cbd where people can leave their vehicles and take a bus ride to town
matatus in CRB …ok
I think its 2 Matatus per Sacco at any given time.
Politics siasa politics siasa mbaya maisha mbaya
All matatu using superhighway to terminates @ globe.
Limuru rd and waiyakiway terminates at ngara
Kidero = Kenya mpya
Parking fee iko yuu already, raising it higher means buildings in the cbd will be converted to private parking lots.

This was done some years back. All it did was inconvenience people coming to town from thika road/limuru road. I remember having to walk from railways to globe to catch a 44. And it was pretty unsafe as early as 7pm…
If you dont want cars in the city, give alternative and reliable transport. Passenger trains and buses could work if properly implemented.
The short term solution is to discouraged the small mathrees by banning them from tao completely then each route to have a single bus in rolling within cbd at an instance. Jioni watu watembee globe, muthurwa na ngara.
Watu watembee, kama Nairobi imekukataa, rudi mashambani.
Hakuna mtu anaweza guza hao wenye personal vehicles. Kumbuka bado ndio wenye matatu.
Bus gani hizi za upus. viti ni kama stool? Si ati watu wanakataa bus. ni vile tu its hectic kutumia bus especially in the so called city(one huge slum).
Kwanza Ronald Ngara Street and Accra Rd are just big parking yards. Even walking on those roads will give you a migraine.
Not high enough. Parking fee in CBD should be 200Bob an hour so that only those who have to drive into CBD to pick supplies or make deliveries do. Hawa wengine wrote watafute parking kwingine. Better still, leave the cars at home.
Wacheni wasiwasi, it will never happen. Not in the near future
What question are we trying to answer? Is it decongestion of increase in county revenues? If its the latter then thats ok
Decongestion.
How did you become a village elder na hio ujinga yote kwa akili. You are pointing out a very interesting phenomena. Why would everyone want to own a car ya kumleta CBD? (Matatus are unreliable hence wamechoka nazo. uliza watu wa eastlands na diaspora ile news wameoneshwa na watu wa matatu). Parking used to be 70/= then ikapanda to 140/= then eventually to 300/=. In all this instances, tuliambiwa hio ndio dawa ya congestion in the CBD but the strategy has never worked. Do you know why? Mass transport is in the hands of private individuals who frustrate commuters mpaka mtu anaona heri anunue mkebe aepuke shida za matatu.
Solution, me thinks, ni serikali to take over public transport and bring about sanity. I stay in South C. Interestingly, what i spend on fuel to town is less than what matatus charge for a round trip. Additionally, I would be very uncomfortable using a matatu infested by bedbugs if i can drive myself to town.
