Manga Coloring Tutorial using Adobe Photoshop

Process

  1. Preparation
  • Scan or Import Line Art: Use a high-resolution scan or clean digital line art.
  • Set Line Art Layer to Multiply: This allows color layers beneath to show through without affecting the black lines.
  1. Flat Colors (Base Layering)
Create separate layers for each region:
  • Skin: Pale peach or light beige.
  • Hair: Solid black with slight blue-gray highlights.
  • Eyes: Crimson red with black tomoe.
  • Cloak: Deep black with red cloud outlines.
  • Forehead Protector: Metallic silver plate, dark blue cloth.
  • Undershirt: Dark gray mesh pattern.
  • Necklace: Light silver.

Use the Lasso Tool or Magic Wand to select areas, then fill with flat color using the Paint Bucket Tool or Brush Tool.

  1. Shading and Highlights
  • Add a new layer above each base color layer.
  • Set it to Multiply for shadows or Overlay/Soft Light for highlights.
  • Use a soft round brush to apply:
    • Shadows under the chin, around the eyes, and inside the cloak folds.
    • Highlights on the forehead protector and hair strands.

Use Clipping Masks to keep shading within the base color boundaries.

  1. Details and Effects
  • Eyes: Add glow or gradient to the Sharingan for depth.
  • Metallic Shine: Use white highlights and gradient overlays on the forehead protector.
  • Hair Strands: Add subtle streaks with a lighter brush to simulate shine.
  1. Final Touches
  • Background: Keep it plain or add a soft gradient for manga-style emphasis.
  • Line Art Cleanup: Erase stray marks or enhance line thickness for dramatic effect.
  • Color Balance: Adjust overall tone using Hue/Saturation or Color Balance filters.

Optional: Manga Print Simulation

  • Convert to grayscale and apply halftone patterns for a true manga print look.
  • Use screen tones for shading instead of soft brushes.
