Some of these malls are in really prime locations. They should just convert them to residential apartment units and sell at an affordable rate.
Even in cities such as SF and NYC, a lot of commercial buildings have been converted to condos.

Kenya’s economy is not big enough for mega malls. Kenyans just can’t afford the mall markup on clothes, jewellery, shoes and the likes. They get such stuff from stalls, hawkers and online vendors who don’t have huge rents baked into their prices.
We only need strip malls with one floor. On that floor you can have a supermarket, a food court and maybe some bank branches and telco customer cares. That is what Kenyans have shown they are willing to buy in malls. Something like this:
