Not a joke. This directive was started by Muhammed to pave way for him to marry his adopted son’s wife. It makes no sense to cover up as a Muslim woman, in a hijab or burqa when Muhammad provided the ultimate hack: adult breastfeeding.
Islam is truly the sanctification of man’s most corrupted instincts. It takes what is base in human nature and give it a divine sanction.
When Muhammad fell in love with his daughter-in-law, yes, the wife of his adopted son, Allah told him not to hide that love out of embarrassment.
Then Allah prohibited adoption altogether, so that Muhammad could marry her without a problem.
Once adoption was banned, adopted sons were no longer considered “mahram” (permanently non-marriageable) to their adoptive mothers. That meant they suddenly became strangers to them under Islamic law.
One case involved an adopted son named Salem. His former adoptive father didn’t feel comfortable with him being alone in the house with his former adoptive mother. So the mother went to Muhammad for a solution. Muhammad told her to nurse him, literally breastfeed him, so he would become “like a son” again.
Aisha, Muhammad’s wife, later instructed her nieces to nurse grown men so that she would become their “grandmother” and they wouldn’t be considered strangers.
A few years ago, Al-Azhar University in Egypt, the most prestigious Islamic institution, issued a fatwa saying that female employees who share an office with a man should nurse him, and women should nurse their cooks and drivers as well.
Islamic scholars differ on technicalities: whether the man must suck directly from the breast or if milk can be expressed into a cup.
However, in the Hadith when the woman asked, “How can I do that when he has a beard?” meaning he was a grown man, Muhammad said “I know, just do it,” he clearly meant sucking directly from the breast.
