Importing a vehicle is cheaper than buying locally

Why are locally used cars more expensive than importing from Japan. You will find a bonobo selling a car more expensive than importing one from Japan. I am talking about second hand cars here.

Way cheaper I might add

I am quite astonished by the fact. I have been checking the price of a second hand Toyota Mark X Zio locally and it goes up to 900k. Upon checking on SBI Japan I find the same model only goes for 674k

It is not that simple, for imported cars the import tax is already paid. The rule of the thumb is that you double the price quoted in japan to know the true cost of that vehicle here. but of course if you import you have to save as these sellers are in bizness and have to make a profit.

The price I have quoted includes shipping and custom duty

You must transport it to Kenya, pay Duty, V.A.T, and other fees. You;ll end up spending more than an m for that 674k car. A lot of people forget that, resulting in lots of confiscated cars in Mombasa.

Water is wet and fire burns.

Ngui îno

Oh hadn’t seen that. Yeah, you save quite a bit when importing it yourself. Especially if you do the bidding yourself and cut out SBT too.

How can you cut out SBT?

The car auctions are done online. You can do the bidding yourself. https://www.jpctrade.com/

Cars are not expensive shida ni our governments is ripping us off with the taxes…

That too would generally be a bit expensive

Did you factor in duty and taxes and other little ports expenses

Isnt it obvious? The local seller must have been through importation process.
Even locally used cars tend to be more expensive than a self import simply because it’s here and many people are afraid of the importation process + the anxiety of waiting.

It’s the cheapest way to buy a car. To buy a japanese car at least (apart from local auctions).

Yes

Can you evade taxes by lets say, you fly to germany, japan ama america and buy a car there and register it in your name. Kisha you ship it off to kenya and say that i’m relocating to kenya. will you still have to pay taxes hapa pia?

Of course

Depends on how long you live abroad. If you’ve lived for more than 2 years and you’ve owned the car for at least 1 year. Yes, you can bring it to Kenya tax free. If you have a family member living abroad and planning to relocate back. Wife, children, husband that you trust. You can buy them stuff. Have them own the stuff for 1 year, then warudi nazo. All tax free.
