He skipped an important step: that hole is usually hidden by a square 2" cover, almost flush with the panel. You must pry that out first.

Ideally, you need a flathead screwdriver, but you don’t normally walk around with tools. It’s just hard plastic with hooks on the inside to keep it in place. A flat padlock key will do, or a tough atm card, your nails, or a combination of all these. It’ll make a popping sound, but when it’s your life nothing else matters. You must be ready and on time. Cough or sneeze, whatever, to mask that, if there’s company. But know that the driver will see an open door alert in the dash the instant you open the latch. Be ready to run like mad.
