Human trafficking to Russia Beware

The recent news concerning Kenyans and the Russia-Ukraine war focuses primarily on reports of human trafficking and forced recruitment of Kenyan citizens to fight for the Russian military.

Here are the key developments:

  • Kenyan Athlete’s Case: The issue gained high-profile attention with the case of Kenyan athlete Evans Kibet, who was captured by Ukrainian forces. In a video released by the Ukrainian army, Kibet alleged that he was tricked into joining the Russian army. He claimed he was offered a job in Russia after his tourist visa expired, but was then forced to sign Russian-language papers which turned out to be a military contract. He claimed he was threatened with execution when he tried to refuse.

  • Kenyan Investigation: The Kenyan government has launched an investigation into reports that its citizens are being trafficked to Russia and coerced into joining the military. The Kenyan embassy in Moscow is working to verify the claims.

  • Trafficking Ring Discovered: Kenyan police recently broke up a suspected human trafficking ring on the outskirts of Nairobi.

They rescued 22 Kenyans who were reportedly awaiting processing to travel to Russia. Police arrested one suspect accused of coordinating the victims’ travel.

The syndicate was allegedly luring desperate job seekers with offers in Moscow, only to send them to fight in Ukraine. Victims reportedly signed contracts committing to pay up to $18,000 for logistics.

  • Other African Nationals:

Kibet’s case and other reports highlight a broader concern about African nationals being recruited, often under false pretenses related to jobs or scholarships, to fight for Russia.

The Ukrainian government has stated that they are holding other captured African nationals from countries like Somalia, Egypt, and Sierra Leone.

  • Economic Impact:

Separate from the military recruitment, Kenya has also been significantly affected by the war through high prices for fuel and fertilizer, as both Russia and Ukraine are major global exporters of these commodities.

This has negatively impacted Kenya’s agricultural sector and contributed to a higher cost of living.

I didn’t know the Russian army can pay such a high amount for what’s basically conscripts.
