Bsc in Engineering

At the University of Nairobi, courses involving technical diagrams and technical drawing are primarily taught within the Faculty of Engineering. These courses are integrated into several engineering programs, where diagrammatic representation, drafting, and schematic design are essential skills. Here’s a structured breakdown:

Programs with Technical Diagram Components

Faculty/School Example Courses Involving Technical Diagrams Notes
Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering Engineering Graphics, Machine Drawing Focus on mechanical parts, assemblies, and manufacturing schematics.
Civil & Construction Engineering Technical Drawing, Structural Diagrams Covers construction plans, civil schematics, and structural layouts.
Electrical & Information Engineering Circuit Diagrams, Technical Drawing 1 (EEE 4203) Includes geometric constructions, sketches, and electrical schematics.
Environmental & Biosystems Engineering Engineering Graphics, System Layouts Emphasis on biosystem schematics and environmental design diagrams.
Geospatial & Space Technology Cartographic Diagrams, Geospatial Mapping Heavy use of technical diagrams for spatial representation.
Architecture & Design (related faculty) Architectural Drawing, Design Visualization Though not engineering, these courses rely extensively on technical diagrams.

Example: Technical Drawing 1 (EEE 4203)

  • Geometric constructions (ellipses, involutes, triangles, epicycloids, parabolas).
  • Sketching and diagrammatic representation of engineering problems.
  • Used in Electrical Engineering but overlaps with other engineering disciplines.

A typical liberal arts degree:

Aspect University of Nairobi – Cultural Studies Liberal Arts Degree (Global Model)
Degree Structure Offered as part of the Bachelor of Arts (humanities & social sciences) and specialized Postgraduate Diplomas (e.g., Cultural Studies, Heritage Management, Gender & Development). Broad-based undergraduate program covering humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and arts. Students often major in one area but take courses across disciplines.
Core Focus Emphasis on African heritage, cultural identity, socio-economic and political contexts, and comparative cultural analysis. Emphasis on critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving across diverse fields; rooted in Western traditions of the “seven liberal arts.”
Specializations Postgraduate diplomas allow specialization in Cultural Studies, Heritage Management, or Gender & Development. Students can specialize in majors like History, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, etc.
Skills Developed Cultural analysis, heritage preservation, socio-political awareness, comparative frameworks. Analytical reasoning, writing, interdisciplinary problem-solving, leadership, and civic engagement.
Career Pathways Cultural heritage management, NGOs, academia, policy research, gender advocacy. Wide-ranging: education, public service, media, consulting, law, business, and graduate studies.
Duration BA: 3–4 years; Postgraduate Diplomas: 1 year full-time. Typically 4 years undergraduate; postgraduate study optional.

Key Departments & Courses

Department Sample Courses
Architecture Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture
Art & Design Bachelor of Arts in Design (graphic, interior, fashion, product design specializations), Master of Arts in Design
Real Estate, Construction Management & Quantity Surveying Bachelor of Real Estate, Bachelor of Quantity Surveying, Bachelor of Construction Management
Urban & Regional Planning Bachelor of Arts in Planning, Master of Urban Management
Landscape Architecture Postgraduate programs in Landscape Architecture

Notes

  • The ADD building is the central hub for studio-based learning, design critiques, and technical workshops.
  • Undergraduate programs like Bachelor of Architectural Studies typically lead into the professional Bachelor of Architecture degree.
  • The Design program is one of the most diverse, covering applied arts, industrial design, and communication design.
  • Professional programs such as Quantity Surveying and Construction Management are geared toward Kenya’s growing infrastructure and real estate sectors.

I can say UoN isn’t the cheapest option, especially for self-sponsored students. Government-sponsored programs are more manageable, but once you add accommodation, food, and other expenses in Nairobi, the cost goes up quickly…

Yes. The cost of attending a basic UoN course isn’t very different from the cost of attending a non-Ivy league college. Meaning that 50% of Americans cannot afford to attend the school despite the bragging and usual hubris expected of these coddled children.

Fine Arts–Related Courses at UoN :artist_palette:

Category Examples of Courses
Performing Arts Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts (focus on theatre, music, dance)
Literature & Creative Writing Bachelor of Arts in Literature (includes creative writing, drama, and cultural studies)
Visual & Cultural Studies Courses in Art, Archaeology, and Palaeontology (covering artistic heritage and material culture)
Language & Communication Programs that integrate creative expression, media, and cultural performance
Philosophy & Aesthetics Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (often includes aesthetics and art theory)

Notes

  • The Performing Arts program is the most directly aligned with fine arts, offering training in theatre, music, and dance.
  • Literature and cultural studies also provide strong grounding in artistic analysis and creative practice.
  • Students can combine fine arts courses with broader humanities subjects, creating interdisciplinary pathways.

My personal recommendation is to not do these courses. A waste of time in this corrupt country, since anybody can do these roles.

I’m gonna patent this particular method at my University’s Linguistics Department for further research.

Not bad for one first year unit.
