How Did Abraham Start Three Major Religions?

One act of sacrifice united 3 billion people @Billy_Graham

That’s why I follow this religion.

As usual I welcome all types of debate, including martians.

"My covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of many nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.”
Genesis 17:4–6

Two Approaches to spreading religion - A guide for militant atheists

  1. Centralized Origin (Middle East-style model)
  • Pros
    • Creates a focal point of meaning, tradition, and pilgrimage.
    • Builds strong identity and cohesion around a sacred geography.
    • Organic spread allows for adaptation to cultures as the message travels outward.
  • Cons
    • Risk of exclusivity: people may feel disconnected if they’re far from the “center.”
    • Transmission can be slow, uneven, and vulnerable to distortion.
  1. Planet-wide Dispersion
  • Pros
    • Immediate universality: no one feels left out, everyone has direct access.
    • Reduces geographic privilege—connection isn’t tied to one culture or land.
    • Faster adoption, less chance of bottlenecking around a single tradition.
  • Cons
    • Risk of fragmentation: without a central anchor, interpretations may diverge wildly.
    • Harder to build shared rituals or symbols that unify across cultures.

Debate Prompts on Unseen Realities

  • Evidence vs. Experience: If we trust gravity because we feel its pull, why not trust God because people feel His presence?
  • Universality vs. Subjectivity: If morality is universal, does that prove a higher lawgiver—or just human consensus?
  • First Cause: If everything needs a cause, what caused the universe—and what caused that cause?
  • Design vs. Chance: Is the fine-tuning of the universe evidence of design, or just luck in infinite possibilities?
  • Problem of Evil: If unseen realities are benevolent, why allow suffering? Is it a test, or proof against them?
  • Science vs. Faith: Science measures unseen forces; faith interprets unseen meaning. Which is more reliable for truth?

Karibuni mabishano, elders.

He didn’t start the the religions. A bunch of bronze age goat herders created him in their minds and the story just grew bigger from thhere.

How come other goat herders were unable to accomplish the same feat? It’s not a particularly rare occupation.. anyone can do it. How did 3 billion people buy into goat herding tales?

Not considering very many other circumstances, the middle east region was one of the earliest centers of civilization which saw the development of writing and law as different cultures interacted through trade and conflict/war. Religion became a central to politics and daily life. Which led to rise of many different religions and that influenced the development of the Abrahamic religions.

Yes. That’s why I’ve included two models of spreading religion across civilizations. The middle eastern model for Africa, Europe and Middle East, planet-wide for the Americas and Asia.
