The government on Friday signed the first contract that will see 435.5 kilometres of roads upgraded to bitumen standard in the next two years under the Road Annuity Programme. Kajiado, Kwale, Isiolo, Wajir, Taita Taveta, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Samburu, Narok, Kericho, and Bomet will benefit from the programme approved by cabinet last March under a private public partnership deal. Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia handed over the first project to Intex Construction Company chairman Kishan Gilot saying no shoddy works will be entertained and that the timelines must be observed to enable Kenyans benefit from the investment. Intex Construction Company (Israeli) will construct and maintain the Ngong – Kiserian – Isinya and Kajiado - Imaroro road in Kajiado County totaling 91.5 kilometres in the next two years and maintain it fior the next decade. The other lots now under consideration include the Lamu - Garsen Road, Kakamega – Ingotse - Namukoye - Nzoia River - Musikoma, Kimaeti - Malakisi – Lwakakha, Shikhendu-Endebess and Ugunja - Ukwala – Ruambwa roads. The Road Annuity framework concept allows the contractor to design and construct the roads within 24 months as well as maintain the same for the next 10 years. The Kenya Rural Roads Authority will also oversee upgrading of the Modogashe-Habaswein-Wajir(143kilometres) and Illasit-Njukini-Taveta(67kilometres) whule the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) will oversee repairs and tarmacking of roads with Nakuru,Maralal,Ol Kalou,Kericho,Bomet and Narok towns.
