Remember Nokia — that giant mobile telecommunication company that use to top the mobile phone industry in the 90s? sure you do. If you were born in the 90s or earlier then you have definitely used or heard of them, and you probably also know that devices were almost as strong as a stone? Lols just kidding… But you get the picture right?. Back then in the 90s and early 2000s, Nokia was that one brand everyone would recommend.
Nokia had it all in-terms of device toughness/strength, style/design, operating system, In-fact Nokia was that phone brand who did no wrong until they actually did. But hold on a second! we haven’t heard much about Nokia in last 7 – 10 years, So what happened to them? Did they fold up? Or did users got bored of their devices?
NB: Did you know that Nokia the first phone brand that support SMS(short message service) which was first released on a device name Nokia 2010 back in 1994.
What caused Nokia’s fall
It’s simple, Nokia fell because they refused to go into the smartphone game early. In the early 2000s Nokia was still dominating the mobile phone industry even with other big competitors like HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sonny Erricson etc.
But something happened in 2007 — Apple released the most innovated touchscreen device anyone had yet seen and in the following year, HTC released the first device to run an android operating system. With these two device in the market, it seems like Nokia’s biggest fear is coming to reality.
Nokia had a board or fossil CEO who were so rigid. They bought Symbian and stubbornly stuck to it rather than embrace Android. They further dug their grave deeper by opting for windows OS which was another dud after realizing their blunder much later.
Old champions have to give way to new champions. That is the natural order of things. Any firm that is a front-runner in a given field will devote most of its energies to defending its turf from multiple competitors. The competitors have better chances of trying out novel paths since this could be the only way to ensure their survival.Look at the list;IBM lost to Clone PCs, Kodak to Sony and Samsung, Microsoft to Google (happening now) etc. The front-runner suffers the burden of maintaining leadership and will always be reluctant to try out new approaches.Other competitors run lower risks when trying out new solutions.
