Google Robot Plays Table Tennis Against A Human

Using heaps of data, Google trained a table-tennis-playing robot to take on human competitors and get better as it did so. The results were impressive and represent a leap forward in robotic speed and dexterity. It also looks really fun.

Achieving human-level speed and performance on real world tasks is a north star for the robotics research community." Thus begins a paper written by a team of Google scientists who helped create, train, and test the table-tennis bot.

Is this really much of a leap. Industrial machines eg robotic bottling machines do this every day. Notice that robot is 2 dimensional. He’s just moving on a x-y plane. Across. He’s not moving backward.

Bottling machines follow a repeatative act and have a fixed template. If a crate has 24 bolltes it is already preprogrammed with the positions of each of the 24 bottles. Table tennis is unpredictable and the robot has to read the human’s hand movements in less than second and prodict the path of the ball and move to that position back and forth many times over. It is a great achievement

Not sure about this one. If you know golf, there’s app called shot tracer( tracker) . As soon as the ball leaves the clubface, it can predict the exact trajectory and distance of ball. Golfers are now using this to improve their swing. A soft ware with a few shot trackers in series can do the same of that ping pong robot.
