Death Of George Kapten
——-
On Christmas Day 1999, Ford Kenya MP for Kwanza and lawyer George Kapten collapsed and died at his home in Kitale.
Some MPs claimed foul play, insinuating that Kapten died a few months after sensationally accusing President Moi of being the prime suspect in the Goldenberg saga.
Following a postmortem, the family secured the services of three pathologists to carry out independent investigations on the cause of death.
Three months later, in March 2000, a section of MPs called for a Select Committee of Parliament to be formed in order to probe the death. This request followed lamentations by the family that the pathologists had given contradicting reports.
The Chief Government Pathologist at the time, Dr. Alex Olumbe stated in his report that Kapten died of a heart attack triggered by the coronary artery disease he suffered from.
On his part, Prof. Aggrey Nyong’o, who was the family pathologist, declared that the MP died of “pulmonary failure caused by congestion of fluid in the lungs, perhaps due to electric failure of the heart that caused the death…”, as The East African Standard, in those very words, reported.
Interestingly, on the Christmas morning that Kapten died, he was visited by Ford-K chairman Kijana Wamalwa.
The Ford-K leader said he had gone to wish Hon. Kapten a Merry Christmas after being urged to reconcile with the deceased by a catholic priest.
