Hata hapa kenya farming sio mchezo. Imagine a farmer in a high potential area planting eg 5 acres of maize. The yield is about 30 bags per acre so a total 150 bags. If he sells the maize at current ksh 4,000 per bag the gross income will be 600,000. Akitoa about 40% production cost (240K) ie ploughing, planting, weeding, harvesting, storage, labour etc anabaki na 360,000. That amount for 1 yr is equivalent to an income of 30,000 per month. That is the equivalent ya ile pesa mtu wa mjengo analipwa (ksh 1500 per day x 20 days).

NB average yield for maize in kenya is 15 bags per acre so in actual fact such a farmer would be making 15k per month from his 5 acres. Afadhali kuwacha hio shamba ukue soja nairobi earning 30k.

This is what they say about tea farming. Tea farmers are earning about 14k per acre per month but 70% of farmers have 1/2 acre tea so earning 7k per month before expenses.

Msito : I do seasoned crops that have survived the political times and they have been tasted by time. These crops have been there since times memorial and their markets are very stable and predictable: they have a stabilized prices that are neither high nor low. It’s : Maize, beans, coffee, macadamia and maybe chilli’s. The rest no no no…
