Divination: The Art of Predicting the Future

Major Biblical Warnings Against Divination

  1. Deuteronomy 18:10–12
  • “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord…”
  • Key Point: Divination is grouped with idolatry and pagan rituals, showing its seriousness.
  1. Leviticus 19:26, 31
  • “Do not practice divination or seek omens.”
  • “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”
  • Key Point: Seeking supernatural guidance apart from God defiles a person.
  1. Isaiah 8:19
  • “When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”
  • Key Point: God alone should be consulted for guidance, not spirits or occult practices.
  1. Jeremiah 27:9–10
  • “So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’ They prophesy lies to you…”
  • Key Point: False predictions mislead people and bring destruction.
  1. Acts 16:16–18
  • A slave girl practiced fortune telling through a spirit. Paul rebuked the spirit in Jesus’ name.

Why the Bible Warns Against Divination

  • Undermines trust in God: Seeking hidden knowledge outside of Him shows lack of faith.
  • Leads to deception: False prophets and fortune tellers mislead people with lies.
  • Spiritual danger: Divination is linked to demonic influence and idolatry.
  • Moral corruption: It aligns with pagan practices condemned by God.

NB: I am from Africa. We know about the dangers of playing God.. and we agree with the Jews.
