Dairy farming I'm semi arid areas

Anyone who has kept dairy cows in areas like Ukambani? Considering these areas milk is not in large quantities, so the market is available. Households buy a litre of milk at 60/70 bob. Nowadays it has gone to 80 in some areas.

What are the best breeds to keep in these areas? And which pastures can grow well there? I hear of caliandra, Napier grass and fodder. Any alternatives?

How many cows to begin with will be viable?

What is fodder?

Can they stand the heat and the diseases that thrive there?

First off this is a stupid rationale..

Second ..

Ama wacha tu

Girlando breed is the cow for you, a cross breed of Bos Indicus (Gir cows from Bharati) and Bos Taurus (Holstein) .

Holstein cow

When you cross the two, you end up a Girlando.

 wewe primary ukisoma science hukuambiwa fodder ni nini?

Ni vile ameihesabu ni kama Nappier na Caliandra si fodder. Ni kama yeye hakushika fodder ni nini. Don’t mind me thou.

Shule mwili wangu ndio ulikuwa unaenda pekeyake

Freshian cross breeds do well in machakos

Another option is Borana cow though maziwa yake sio mengi.

Napier do well under irrigation, panda Packchong f 1, it has a higher crude protein.
Panda any leguminous plant for more protein e.g Caliandra, mukuna, sesbania sesban, some acacia tree pods pia huwa na protein.

I had forgotten about the Sahiwal cattle, which are available in Kenya , try crossing them with any bos Taurus.

Try the Sahiwal breed. You can get young heifers from Laikipia university or Kabarak university farm

Grow sweet potato veins, Nappier grass in sunken pits(they conserve water, plant lucern na pia mahindi ya silage or sorghum.
On breeds,Do Ayrshire or Guernsey. Au you do your own breeding .

Hizi hazitawezana na climate ya Ukambani my friend. It’s like you have never been in that harsh climate

Imagine Ayrshire will…it is a very Hardy breed.
He can cross them with sahiwal or even buy from Karlo za hizo area or SEKU

It can survive. Actually any breed can survive but the bottom line is that it is susceptible to so many diseases and conditions

Sure kabisaa. But if he sources them from Huko KARLO they may have done some crossbreeding na zikakuwa fiti.

Mixed breeds for 3 generations. There is a big farm in Kithimani that can advise you
