Anyone who has kept dairy cows in areas like Ukambani? Considering these areas milk is not in large quantities, so the market is available. Households buy a litre of milk at 60/70 bob. Nowadays it has gone to 80 in some areas.
What are the best breeds to keep in these areas? And which pastures can grow well there? I hear of caliandra, Napier grass and fodder. Any alternatives?
How many cows to begin with will be viable?
Can they stand the heat and the diseases that thrive there?
First off this is a stupid rationale..
Second ..
Ama wacha tu

Girlando breed is the cow for you, a cross breed of Bos Indicus (Gir cows from Bharati) and Bos Taurus (Holstein) .

When you cross the two, you end up a Girlando.

Freshian cross breeds do well in machakos
Another option is Borana cow though maziwa yake sio mengi.
Napier do well under irrigation, panda Packchong f 1, it has a higher crude protein.
Panda any leguminous plant for more protein e.g Caliandra, mukuna, sesbania sesban, some acacia tree pods pia huwa na protein.

I had forgotten about the Sahiwal cattle, which are available in Kenya , try crossing them with any bos Taurus.

Imagine Ayrshire willâŚit is a very Hardy breed.
He can cross them with sahiwal or even buy from Karlo za hizo area or SEKU
It can survive. Actually any breed can survive but the bottom line is that it is susceptible to so many diseases and conditions
Sure kabisaa. But if he sources them from Huko KARLO they may have done some crossbreeding na zikakuwa fiti.
