The boda boda sector provides one million direct jobs for riders earning Sh1 billion daily, says a new study, underlining the importance the motorcycle business to Kenya’s economy amid a countrywide crackdown on the operators over indiscipline.
A study of the sector by listed firm Car & General (C&G) – which sells motorcycles, their spare parts and other engineering equipment – shows that it also supports six million livelihoods indirectly, about 10 percent of the country’s population.
C&G estimates that each rider makes an average of Sh1,000 per day from an average of 15 rides, translating to a daily income of Sh1 billion or Sh365 billion annually for the one million of them.
This is equivalent to 3.4 percent of GDP and almost matches the output of Kenya’s education sector, whose contribution to GDP stands at 3.8 percent.
The Treasury is also raking in about Sh60 billion yearly in fuel taxes from boda bodas, which consume an average of Sh300 worth of petrol each in a day.
This translates to Sh300 million worth of fuel each day, out of which about Sh163 million goes to the government in form of taxes, levies and other charges.
“There are 1.2 million riders in Kenya. Nine out of 10 are used for commercial purposes, representing over one million jobs created. Seventy-five percent are youth and six percent are female,” says the C&G report.
High IQ alert. I’ve always argued that nduthis are a net negative to the economy.
Economic output ya kshs 1,000 per day (its actually lower than that) by the most productive demographic is something we should be ashamed of.
1 million bodas on the road hio ni guess work tupu. It’s impossible to tell, no way to collate the numbers and discount the scrap, accident, private use boda
Each rider makes 1000 daily is not possible. Bikes are being repossessed en mass for failure to pay 4/500 daily. Some boda owners expect 300 daily for their bikes. No way the rider is making 700.
Six million indirectly? Each bike indirectly supports 6 people. These young guys have how many kids? Even accounting for spare shops, everything imported, mechanics (1 mechanic for maybe 10/15 bikes), no way your reach six. If you do reach 6, that 1000 divided by 6 is about 170. That’s nothing to be bragging about.
ata the nduthi guys take a rest one day or two in a week. so multiplying the figure by 365 is unrealistic. pia the guys fuel kwa izi petrol station zina pump moja kwa mtaa with adulterated fuel. the assessment wanapeana is pure crap. nduthi zinaongezeka daily making the biz unprofitable. lazima chairman akubali ndo mtu ubebwe at a bargain. competition is stiff na bikes ni za hire purchase so hakuna cha 1000 bob per day
1 million is only 5% of the working adult population majority of whom I’d guess wanafanya casual labor or own small businesses which don’t make 1k a day consistently.
Heniway let me educate you kiasi. A nduthi guy making 600 Bob a day and a person selling vegetables and fruits making the same 600 have vastly different economic footprints.
Piga hesabu ya how many people are in the produce supply chain ndio vegetables zifike Githurai or Marikiti
From fertilizer sellers to farmers to brokers to transporters, by the time hio nyanya infakika kwa soko, at least 3 different people/businesses are involved and benefiting.Hii ni daily.
Do the same for nduthi guys. Tuambie hapa how the daily supply chain for a boda boda operator looks like.
Statistics are coming directly from C & G toilets.
A few boda boda owners will tell you that making a net of 500 bob per day is almost next to impossible. Ukilipa loan, uweke mafuta, upelekee the owner kakitu then ujilipe si kitu rahisi.
1 million ‘active’ boda bodas ni pure lies. So 1 million boda bodas with each making 15 rides in a day. So total 15million rides are taken in Kenya every day…how now? Who are these rides carrying? So boda bodas make more money than Safaricom which has over 30M customers?
Hapa nation or whoever published this story wametubeba vibaya.
I want to believe that in Nairobi county alone the number of boda bodas cannot exceed 50K at maximum.
Whore sani, you think mzee kibaki was stupid and that you are wiser than him?
You don’t remember time this Nairobi town was a war zone tukipingwa ngeta na vijana?
Let me educate you whore , this boys make a living and even married . majority of petty thieves entered this business transporting goods to small and medium enterprises daily at an affordable fees including taking children to school and back to their parents .
Whore sani enjoy kimwerer loot pale sugoi but learn to do simple research put of loot comfort zone.
How come ALL motorbike sellers in kenya sell them on credit? Ingekuwa biashara poa si vijana wangekuwa able kuafford ingine after kufanya job miezi kumi?
Let’s embrace wheelbarrows , they won’t cause crimes and zitachangia billions kwa uchumi.
:D:D swine’s want vijana warudi kwa the muscle era where everything requires muscles.hawa vijana wakirudi korogocho watakua majambazi .wewe monocot ukiwa kwa kadudu kako ka 200k utakua unalimwa like nansense ukiporwa
