(Meria advisory! Long read)

In the TB treatment room I found an old gentleman, I think all the staff in this hosi were above 55, nikapewa kiti and we kicked off a conversation and he insisted on the importance of not only taking the medicine but finishing the dose, he stressed that TB is a killer decease na nikikosa kumaliza dose the TB will become resistant to the drugs and it may prove to be fatal. He went on to say that am lucky coz the treatment was now in tablet form, he informed me that earlier ilikuaga ni daily injections for 8 months. So saying he stood up, opened a cupboard and took down a big box, it was the size of half a bale of unga, he took a markpen looked at my card searching for my name which he wrote on the front of the big box in huge letters kisha akaifungua akanionyesha hizo madawa zote akasema ni zangu, Ngai Ngai Ngai, hey! Nikamuuliza kwani naenda fungua chemist, akacheka akasema hapo kuna aina tatu za dawa of which I will be taking 4 tablets of each per day for 8 months, haiyaiyaiya, ati atia dagitari, mieri inana? He said yes, na ni siwai kosa siku ata moja, akachukua the three different medicines na kunipa dose ya hio siku which I duly swallowed, alafu akafunika box akarudisha kwa kabati ikabidi nimuulize vipi mbona anarudisha dawa zangu store, he pointed out to me that I will have to be going to the hosi everyday to take my dose under their supervision. This would happen until the a day they would have confidence in me alafu ndio nipewe dose ya week moja. Haisuru, tukaagana with promises to meet the following day. Dawa zenyewe ndio hizi.

Following day over kithaa ya lunch nilikua hapo hosi kumeza dose, nikapata doc yuko lunch and there was a line of patients waiting for him, we were a mixed bunch ranging from all ages and a healthy discussion ensued, ile ilinistua nimama mmoja alikua amebeba kamtoto ka about three yrs kusema eti ni mtoi anaungua TB sio yeye, haiya! Mtoi wa miaka tatu na TB, all along I had thought TB niya wavutaji fegi na waathiliwa wa ukimwi due to thir weak immune system. It was an eye opening session. Myamaa Yule alikua karibu namimi akasema alipo anza dawa like a month ago alifungiwa kila kitu anachopenda, no smoking, no alcohol and no ferking for 8 months, most of the other guys around wakasema pia wao ni hivo hivo, I wondered why mie sikua nimefungiwa chochote and when the doc came nilimuuliza hili swali, he said that my strain of TB sio ya lungs kaa ya hao watu wengine hence the different instruction. Nikameza dose yangu nikaishia.
After 3 weeks of visiting the hosi daily ndio doc aligain confidence na mimi na nikapewa dose ya week moja nibebe niende nayo with a stern warning nisikose ata siku moja kumeza dawa, as I love myself na nilikua nataka kupona mie nilikua nazimeza everyday after lunch, by this time nilikua nimerudi job and had been imprisoned behind a desk eti ni light duties. How I missed the open highway, the roar of a powerfull engine and the vibration of the steering wheel on my hands. Muarabu hakua akitaka kuniona anywhere near a truck. Mtu amezoea kazi ya field kumuweka behind a desk nikaa kumuua, I would push papers and pick calls via the VHF radio all day na nikiboeka kazi ilikua nikutembea around the yard ama kuscratch balls, I would envy the derees coming to the office to pick mileage for safari ya wherever in East Africa they were heading.
Baada ya one month on a Friday aftey I got a call from the butcher, the surgeon who had done the operation, he wanted to see the scar and also follow up on my treatment, as I was in tao I headed there, whom did I find at the reception, none other than nurse Judy looking as beautiful as ever, I got an instant boner when I saw her smile as we shook hands, she seemed genuinely pleased to see me as she perused the diary to confirm my appointment, lady luck was on my side this afternoon coz the doc had hurriedly left for an emergency and while waiting for him to turn up we got to know one another well, to cut the long story short by the time the doc came what I didn’t know about Judy was not worth knowing and on top of it we had a date for that evening. Doc alinikagua and liked his art, akacheki madawa zangu akasema so far so gd, he also insisted that I never miss my daily dose, name nikambombard na maswali kibao ya TB na ilibidi anifukuze akisema he has other patients waiting.
At 5pm katoka job na mbickup ya rd patrol kapitia hosi kumchukua Judy, both of us had the whole weekend off as we had taken leave, nilipo mdrop kwake achukue kaovernight bag ndio nilifikilia nimpeleke wapi, wakati tulipanga I wasn’t sure she would turn up, soon enough akatokea na tukashika Malindi rd tuafururiza moja kwa moja tukapita Mtwapa, Kanamai, Kikambala, sisi hao tukapita junction ya Sun and Sand na kabla kufika Kijipwa kuna ka barabara kamejificha on your right hua kanapeleka mtu hadi Paradise hotel, right opposite paradise kuna tu cottages tusafi sana hapo na hapo ndipo tulijipata, time was around saa moja na nusu.
After checking into the cottage sikurukia kitu coz I knew a had the whole weekend infront of me, instead tuliamua kuingia kwa swimming pool tukigojea dinner, she was an expert swimmer and kept slipping from my grip teasing me all the time, she would let me grab her for a second and then slip away like an eel leaving me holding water. Tulikatiziwa game tulipoitiwa dinner but before we sat on the table we took a shower first and it took all my will power kutokula hio kitu.
After candle light diner pamoja na wageni wengine we retreated back to our cottage na threshold ilifikishwa, that’s all I can say.
Following morning took a long walk on the beach, swam in the ocean covered one another with the sand then back to the cottage for more …. , it was a weekend that never was, a weekend that flew by, a weekend that to me lasted just a few minutes, Sunday afternoon we packed our bags and headed back to reality as my nurse alikua anaingia kazi usiku nami kaenda nyumbani kurecharge nikijua Monday ni back to my boring desk job.
Kurudia dawa this time nikapewa za one month, box muzima ungethania naenda ongezea stock kwa chemist, the doc was happy with my progress na akanishow niendelee hivo hivo, after three months things started happening, trouser zangu waist size 32 zikaanza kunikataa and a few people commented that am gaining weight, I had to change my wardrobe to size 35, kuuliza doc akasema ni effect za dawa, TB ilikua imenikula sana na vile ilikua ya fukuzwa kwa mwili ndio nilikua naongeza weight, haiya, all along I had thought I was at 63kgs coz of cheki maneno and ufisi, kumbe TB ni mbaya hivo, huku kazini muarabu akaanza kuniangalia suspiciously, vile nilikua nazidi kunenepa kimwili akafikili am embezzling his chapaa na nikatolewa kwa ofisi and thank God nikarudishiwa gari kubwa. Simunajua mtu akinona hua mnasema eti anakula vizuri. Ata niliporudi barabarani dawa zangu nilikua nabebana nazo, deree mmoja aliona dawa zangu na akaspread romuor eti hua nameza ma taptap za AIDS saitan yeye. By the end of the treatment I weighed in at 85kgs.
Siku ya mwisho kumeza dawa I was in town coz I had an appointment with my doctor and after thourough tests akaniambia am cured, this was wonderful news na nikapitia kwa surgeon pia naye niskie verdict yake and he confirmed the good news, this called for a celebration na mimi huyooo na Judy tena, this time we disappeared to Malindi kushukuru Mungu…
The rest as you know is history.
This hekaya was triggered by talkers asking about the need for medical check ups per yr, had I been doing it the TB would have been discovered earlier even before I got the lump, please go and get checked as this might save you a lot of worry and some money too. Next in line for me ni check up ya prostate cancer, @Fieldmarshall couchp alielezea hii kitu and am horrified at the prospect. @Ice_Cube lete wrink.
Asanteni
