The Government of Tanzania has announced the construction of a new port at Kisiwa-Mgao in Mtwara Region, dedicated to handling bulk cargo such as fertilizer, cement, and coal.

The project will be implemented by the Chinese contractor M/S China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC).

The total cost is TZS 434.5 billion (~USD 248.3 million), fully funded by the Government of Tanzania.

According to Minister of Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, construction will begin on January 3, 2025, and is scheduled for completion by July 3, 2027.

The new port will:
Improve cargo handling efficiency
Support industrial exports
Reduce dust-related issues currently faced at Mtwara Port
