Airbnb hosts and other digital entrepreneurs in Tanzania have been given until the end of August to voluntarily register for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), or risk facing legal action, the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has announced.

The move comes as part of a broader effort by TRA to tighten compliance in the rapidly growing digital economy, where many individuals earn income through online platforms without fulfilling their tax obligations.

TRA Commissioner General, Mr Yusuph Mwenda, said that while platforms like Airbnb, Meta, Instagram and Netflix have created new opportunities for Tanzanians to generate income, many digital business owners remain outside the formal tax system.

“We are seeing a significant increase in people earning from short-term rentals via Airbnb, running home-based online shops, or creating content on streaming platforms. These are legitimate income-generating activities, and those involved must comply with national tax laws,” he said.

Mr Mwenda emphasised that from 1st August 2025, TRA is offering a one-month grace period, during which digital entrepreneurs, including Airbnb hosts, can come forward to register and begin paying taxes without facing penalties.
