CORRUPTION in government is costing President Uhuru Kenyatta support, especially from his Central and Rift Valley strongholds, a new poll by Infotrak suggests.
The poll shows that the highest number of Kenyans concerned about corruption hail from Central and Rift Valley, the two regions that overwhelmingly voted for Uhuru and William Ruto in 2013.
The poll shows Uhuru’s approval rating has dropped from 59.8 per cent in November 2014, to 33.7 per cent last week.
The survey indicates Cord leader Raila Odinga’s popularity rose from 19.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent in the last one year.
Kenyans still view the two as the main contenders for the Presidency, with Peter Kenneth coming third with 5.7 per cent. Kenneth has maintained a low political profile since the last elections.
Fourth in popularity is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka with 2.5, Martha Karua 2.2, William Ruto 1.6, Moses Wetang’ula 1.4 and Musalia Mudavadi 1.2.
Many of Uhuru’s supporters now appear undecided, with this number rising from 8.7 per cent in November last year to 21.7 per cent this year.
The poll was conducted and sponsored by Infotrak Research and Consulting between November 6 and 9.
A sample of 1,000 respondents was interviewed to represent the Kenyan adult population of 19,462,358, translating into a minimum margin of error of -/+ 3.1, with a 95 percent degree of confidence.
The survey was conducted in 25 counties in all the former 8 provincial regions of Kenya.
According to Infotrak CEO Angela Ambitho, the drop in Uhuru’s approval rating could be attributed to growing apathy among Jubilee supporters.
“The supported are saying that you are not listening to us and we are seeing you doing little to deal with corruption,” Ambitho said.
In November 2014, only 6 percent of respondents in a not dissimilar poll were concerned about corruption, compared to 40.9 per cent now.
Infotrak says 52 per cent of Central Kenya list corruption as their greatest concern and 49 percent of Rift Valley say the same.
Interestingly, respondents from the Cord strongholds of Nyanza and Western are not as highly concerned with corruption, at 26 per cent and 32 per cent respectively.
Previous polls have seen around 90 percent approval for Uhuru in Central, but this has fallen to 67 percent in the current poll.
On what should be done on corruption, 60 percent want those accused prosecuted and jailed while only 28 percent and 23 per cent say they should step aside or resign, respectively.
Despite the concerns on Uhuru’s perceived inaction on corruption, the Jubilee Coalition remains the most popular political outfit at 37.5 per cent.
Cord has a rating of 32.8 per cent while 22.1 per cent of respondents said they do not feel close to any of the current political outfits.
The opposition rose from 51 per cent to 58 per cent, with the media maintaining the lead as the most trusted institution nationwide at 83 per cent.
Uhuru rating drops over corruption
I know it would have been easy to know Angela is doing the opinion poll and front run the release of the results with the fore quoted “propaganda piece”. If the spin masters at jubilee are playing
