I may not entirely agree with you but what i know is that many people(whether poor or not) who line up to vote have no business going anywhere near a voting booth. This not only applies in Kenya but actually in any country that purports to practice democracy.
What I mean is hio oil ya 1000 bob nimelipia 160 bob as the retailer. When i sell it at 2000 bob, sitaongeza tax to be 320. The govt still gets the 160 that I paid. Hio iko juu ni faida yangu, which i will compute profits and cough 30% to the govt. Na nikijilipa mshahara, another 30%.
So you are comparing me to the 100 guys who paid the cumulative 160 bob for the oilâs VAT? Na ni wao walikunywa hio mafuta?
I will look for a report and post here, but you should ask yourself why most companies went for the kadogo economy several years back, from banks, safaricom even NSSF bana, they are a huge mass market meaning more sales = more taxes for the coffers. You may spend more as a household than the average poor household but cumulatively, your middle class population may not be paying more than the poor folks as a whole since they are much more in number, with more households. VAT is collected from the manufacturers, it does not matter whether the loaf of bread gets consumed in Mathare or Muthaiga
the VAT is calculated from the amount you paid the manufacturer when it was bought, the extra amount you make from over pricing remains your profits and it is your initiative to pay taxes on the same to KRA, hapa ndio ETR zinafaa kukunasa
Cumulatively, the poor draw more than the middle/upper class. For example, I pay 1,000 NHIF yet I still have to pay for a private medical insurance coz the poor fools who pay 100 have filled the facility straining it such that i can not get my 1000 bob worth of service.
And that is why I said, The poor are taxed. The middle class are taxed the most. The real billionaires are taxed the least. So, this is really just another Middle class rant.
