Wololo. Mbele haiko sour for these NYS suppliers

On November 25, 2015 when Pope Francis was on his first visit to Kenya, unbeknown to most people, a group of National Youth Service suppliers had camped at State House gates Nairobi hoping to catch a glimpse of President Uhuru Kenyatta. They were unsuccessful.

They tried again on September 15 last year but this time at Sagana State Lodge as the Head of State was meeting Mt Kenya leaders.

Once again, they were unsuccessful. They have written numerous letters to President Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and they are yet to receive a reply.

The Nation sat down with some of them this week and heard horror stories of auctions, evictions, blacklisting by banks, broken marriages and even deaths, all related to unpaid-for supplies to the NYS.

Since 2015, they have not been paid. All they have are promises, hopes and faith as guiding light on a journey whose end they can’t foretell.

Despite their numerous pleas, the suppliers said, for the three years she was the Cabinet Secretary at the ministry, Mrs Sicily Kariuki did not meet them. On the other hand, PS Lilian Mbogo-Omollo met them a few times and offered promises and hope.

They said that since 2015, five verification committees of pending bills have been established and companies cleared for payments are yet to be paid.

They said a particular senior procurement officer has been condescending to them every time they sought their payments, telling them “sitaki kuona nyinyi wamama hapa” when they turn up to ask for their payments.

The Nation has independently established that the same official was a key cog in siphoning money using ghost companies.

Here are some of their stories. One supplier said he has already received a notice of auction from his bank unless he clears his loan in the coming weeks. Their real names have been withheld at their request to avoid jeopardising their relationship with NYS officials.

So they’re on the verge of losing everything, but still want their details hidden for fear of jeopardizing their relationship with the same officials they accuse of refusing to pay them?
Let’s be honest, the real reason they don’t want to be mentioned is because they also engaged in corruption. They probably were awarded tenders fraudulently, then heavily inflated the cost of whatever was supplied to NYS.

fucked up government. Some of them still went ahead and elected the same government in the name of KUMIRAKUMIRA

I met one from Thika sometime last month. The supplier is sick and in debt. He has been following up payments since 2015-16-17.
Most of these suppliers own small businesses. They supplied NYS camps in constituencies NYS youth programmes were happening. Most are youth and women.
They supplied vegetables , meat , generally foodstuffs etc for nearly a year to the small NYS camps in more than 100 constituencies…
Anyway, its Pres. Uhuru’s last term , he should deal with these ministry officials ruthlessly, they refused to pay the small suppliers instead paying the big suppliers billions even when they supplied air .
May God also intervene for these small business people, they are suffering with some having took loans in 2015-16-17.I felt for the old supplier.
Let these NYS pay for their actions.

A friend told me yesterday, this new NYS scandal was exposed after the small suppliers who had not been paid since 2015-16-17 , approached some senior officials in the NIS.
They explained their woes, they had not been paid for 3 years while unscrupulous big suppliers were being paid billions speedily after supplying goods to NYS in less than 2 weeks.
They wanted to bring the house down.
That’s why The Daily Nation and the Star quoted the NIS as having been the whistle blower in the new NYS scandal.
Some good work there!

This time round lazima watu waekwe ndani. The govt needs to contract PWC or Deloitte to scrutinize every bill.Anyone found culpable should be sentenced and there assets freezed. Its not fair for a few individuals to become wealthy at the expense of thousands of desperate youths.

PWC and Deliotte?? You are kidding. Those companies give unqualified audit opinions for listed companies, a week before those same companies announce profit warnings or gigantic losses. Hizo ni bure. When you throw a bone, they will dance to your tune.

Those two audit firms will just collude with the thieves…already one of them is in trouble mahali flani

Which month was this?

meant years 2015 ,2016 and 2017

The last people you want auditting your office are the big 4.Boss hao sio singo matha.Wanakuuliza swali ya kitu unajaribu kuficha iroomociaku cinainaina

If you want integrity, try the big 4s

I see people trying to get government and county government contracts nashindwa if they lack gray matter, hizo vitu siwezi taka , My neighbor just lost his harrier due to delays by some county goverment to pay suppliers, I have a friend who was contracted to supervise road construaction bado hajalipwa that was 3 years ago !

stupid kenyans

And it’s worldwide, si Kenya tu, Athur Andersen - Enron, KPMG - Gupta’s, Deloitte - Mumias, PWC was in Jan banned from auditing listed companies in India for 2yrs
