3 Decades ago people had good memory largely because the proliferation of computers was still in its infancy, Nowadays there is no motivation for young kids to look for encyclopedias to read about a certain topic. Just a few clicks on google and even before finishing typing in the keyboards Google is already predicting what you are looking for.
The instant generation is upon us now. During my High School days we used to memorize phone numbers based on Town Calling codes.
Telephone Exchanges had specific prefix code. Nairobi was 02
The other day a pal was arrested kwa local wines and in the commotion his phone was lost. Took 2 days for him to be traced kwa stenje. Dude can’t recall a single phone number offhead. Try recall 5 contact numbers wakuu
I can recall at least twenty numbers za relatives, friends and colleagues at work. But kusema that I should memorize 400 contacts in my phone book ni ummeffi
I can remember minutiae of things I am interested or fascinated by. My short term memory is terrible but my retrograde memory is impeccable. I can remember names of 50 people I shared a class with in primary school. I can remember mythological places from books I have read like Lilliput. I can remember vocabularies I like that I came across only once. I have never lost my line so I imagine that I can remember 10 contacts off head of all my immediate family members. Of course if your number is easy to remember I will remember it even if I don’t talk to you much.
It depends on interest. The fact that I love true crime helps me remember extreme details of the crime stories I get obsessed with. For example I can give you a time line of Gabby Petito before she was killed. I can give you Mackenzie’s time line. Where he lives, his wives names and the children who are in the limelight which I believe is his first born called Dan. I know Mackenzie’s age, I don’t know how, I know the high school he went to. Ask me at the end of the year I will still remember. It’s just a matter of how interested I am. If I have zero interest I don’t remember anything.
