Using cutlery is economical. Imagine how much water the 1.5 billion Chinese people would waste if each of them used half a liter to wash hands before and after every meal instead of using chopsticks.

I’m pretty sure cutlery was not invented of the purpose of eradicating diseases. In fact, the connection between germs and diseases was made very recently.
Until 1890s, the vast majority of the world believed in the miasma theory - that diseases are spread by ‘bad air’.
Unless you are saying spoons were invented in 1890s when the germ theory became accepted.

Alafu, you can eat with your hands hygienically. Water is now much cleaner and safe, soap is widespread and there are hand sanitizers now. Something Galileo and Isaac Newton would never have conceived.
