Currently, it is hard to predict who will win the August elections, with the possibility of a run-off being high. Kalonzo’s primary goal is to be in government in 2017. Election indicators such as opinion polls, voter registration records, control of government machinery etc all give Jubilee a slight advantage. Kalonzo, like other politicians, is motivated by self interest because he has financial and career goals to achieve as a politician. Therefore, he has to make an educated guess on which party will win the general elections. If he stays in NASA, the probability of attaining his goal is below 50%. Considering his sizable following, if he shifts to Jubilee, he will be guaranteed of being in government, and shield Jubilee from a possible run-off. Simply, Kalonzo is taking unnecessary risk being in NASA while he can reduce the risk to almost nil if he joins Jubilee. Technically, he is cornered. He MUST join Jubilee or take a huge risk of not being in the next government by being in NASA.

Most politicians cant stomach being out of government for 10 years. 5 years is long enough for someone who was accustomed to government resources. 10 years out and people will forget him in his hometown…and that is why he MUST be in government this year.
