Before I hear people saying its Colonialism? Or they’re after Africa’s wealth? Or they want to trap us in debt? these certainly cannot be the only reason why China is interested in such a semi-backward continent?
In every part of Africa, Chinese firms are building roads, bridges, dams, ports, rails, airports, schools, skyscrapers etc. Why? What does China see in Africa that we cannot?

A market, a huge one that has overstayed in the adolescence stage but should come of age in some 20-30 years. They are taking advantage of the fact that they face virtually no competition right now so they have to dig in before others decide to come in.
Because the chinese govt is offering loans for these projects without any political strings attached. The west will dictate about democracy and human rights before they offer financing. The chinese do not care about those things so they’ve gained a foothold plus they have the money

The Chinese are leasing the port from Sri Lanka for 99yrs, order for the Chinese to recoup their 1bn . In short the Chinese control and own that port for 99yrs .
Are u also aware China has taken full ownership of Zambia’s Electricity company so as to recover their loans

So where else in the world will they get undeveloped space with huge resources and wealth with great potential to expand ,a place with conditions similar to China a few decades ago…
They will probably run it better than the Zambians… Because they are in it to make money so will run it effectively…
Those are western scare tactics, china is investing worldwide even european countries are borrowing from the silk road fund. What Africans should do is negotiate better, more jobs for africans and to guard its agricultural sector.

I dont see any problem with the chinese running that port, all Sri Lanka needs to do is ensure they get the customs taxes for all imports/exorts. Let the chinese ay themselves from port charged. After all its not the only port there. Same thing if a chinese businessman decides to invest in a hotel here. All the government needs to do is ensure he is paying taxes like everyone else. How he makes his money is not important as long as its not illegal

Chinese have built almost anything there was to build in China. There’s nothing left to build. I saw a video with new homes staying empty. No new buyers. Olympic stadiums started rusting away at some point. They have trained skilled workers and available capital from a huge population and unspent pension / retirement plans. So all these resources have to be dumped somewhere with a guaranteed return. And maybe sell off some of their slow moving inventory. After all, when doing African projects, they import everything up to nails. ** Stupid we don’t get tax revenues from the imported raws and then our local entepreneurs selling the same products get bypassed and trampled. In fact no new job opportunities in hardware stores etc. And we talk about creating 500k jobs and improving the budget deficit.
