Next time, if it’s on a leash, approach him slowly and gently put you hand on his nose. He will not bite. Dogs have amazing scent ability. They can identify different people by scent alone. Once he gets your scent, he stores it in his memory and remembers it as a friendly person. Most people assume when dog grawling is aggressive when it’s rather the opposite.
