Tho. it happens everywhere kuna biz. mzuri na barriers to entry are low. Hata yellow cabs za new York had a medallion system where not just anybody could paint a car yellow na aanze kubeba. Tho. gova. should organise it. In New York, it’s the city that used to determine how many taxis they feel are needed in the streets, then they auction the medallions. Hii pesa is meant to protect those who are already in business from new entrants. yani cost ya kuingia inakuwa juu hence less competition meaning more profit.
so any business Kenya hii ni members ONLY club…

Mimi kuna time I overheard a conversation between a matatu driver (wa Ngong) and his friend.

They were talking about how these Karuri/Lucky Trans matatus started plying the Mlolongo route. Karuri ni za Banana originally. The owner wanted to change the route, and Mlolongo guys and their youth goons were resisting, saying alipe some exorbitant fee.

So he went and collected Banana youths with pangas and they ambushed hao wa Mlolongo. Ati damu ilimwagika kama mto na mtu akaachiwa route. Later when they went to ask him for a more reasonable fee, akakataa. He had already shown them their place.

This pesa ya shimo is also applicable to Boda boda riders. Someone was telling me ati shimo ya TRM thika road mtu hulipa 100K just to start riding and picking passengers from there. It is a very lucrative spot.
