What Kind Of Business Practice/Ethics Is This Hospital Following?

Youths, led by Gatina ward MCA David Ayoi, stormed a hospital on Saturday, July 17, demanding the release of Michael Araka Ligare who was allegedly detained in the hospital since Wednesday, July 14, over a Ksh 68,000 bill balance which was incurred by his wife. Police officers had to storm the Nursing Home in Kangemi in a bid to disperse the youths by using teargas. The family had, in three installments, paid a total of Sh52,000 through M-Pesa.

According to Ligare, his wife Sharolin khadi had visited the hospital on Wednesday, July 14, at 8 pm for delivery and developed complications.

However, the baby died at the hospital and the mother was transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital.

“This hospital decided to detain me here and on top of the balance, I am paying Sh1,100 every day. I have even been given a uniform for sick people,” Ligare told The Standard.

Ayoi said it was unfortunate that the hospital was detaining a healthy person, especially during this period of coronavirus.

According to hospital accountant, Joshua Mugeni, Ligare had voluntarily accepted to remain at the hospital as his family raises the balance to clear the balance.

Police took Ligare and the hospital representatives, led by an accountant Joshua Mugeni, to Kangemi police station for further questioning.

The High Court in 2018 ruled that it was illegal for a hospital to detain a patient over unpaid bills.

The court through, Judge Wilfrida Okwany, ruled that it was a violation of a patient’s rights for a hospital to decline to release them over accumulated medical bills.

She stated that a hospital has the right to demand payment of services but holding the patient is not one of the ways to recover the debt citing that it is an infringement to freedom of movement.

Africans should learn to respect people’s businesses. Endeni public hospitals kama Hanna pesa kama mimi. I go to kanji hospitals. Hii mambo ya kujiweka class ya private hospitals and schools na huna pesa tuwache.

Kumbe wewe ni mutu ya rhodes ama casino kama mimi.

Saw a thread here where ktalk mbirrioneas get charged I think 5k for a dental X-ray, while the same cost’s 400 kwa hosi zile za catholic sisters

Mimi na familia yangu tumejipanga hivi:-
[ol]

Ni kama sirikali has given them the right to steal from the wananchi.

Hiyo ya kanjo river road ndio casino. Dawa tuna kimbilia mumbi house transchem.

Employer provided medical insurance has messed up healthcare in Kenya mpaka gava haioni haja ya improving public hospitals. Unapata a very junior poorly paid worker pia anaenda Nairobi hospital for minor procedures that would cost him/her over 5k while kanjo clinics could do it for under 1k. Hawa nadhani ndio wanapata nguvu ya kwenda private hospitals wanakwama huko once the card’s limit is depleted. Why would a common flu take one to a costly private hospital? Why would a peasant insist on taking his pregnant wife to Mater while Pumwani ni bure?

 . Interesting, ati the healthy man who was the guarantor to the patient was forced to wear patients attire, then forced to pay 1100= daily on top of the balance.

That grieving, poor family should not pay a cent for shambolic medical services. Why did their baby die? Hospitals in Kenya often cover up negligence by doctors & nurses because they know that most people are ignorant about health matters. This family should actually sue the hospital for money, how can they kill a baby, screw up with the mother so badly that she has to be transferred to knh and on top of that ask for payment??
One of my hubby’s best friends, his wife went for an elective c section at one of these mid tier private hospitals. The wife had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, except that she was breech; this was the indication for a cs. Soon after the kid was born, minutes later, he was dead from ‘breathing complications.’ They didn’t suction the baby’s airways or apply oxygen. Everyone in healthcare knows that cs babies need assistance to improve on their breathing because their fluid in the lungs isn’t expelled like in vaginal delivery. As if that wasn’t enough trauma, they left surgical equipment in her uterus for which she had to get a second operation after her stomach pains became unbearable. The last straw which broke the camels back was the hospital demanding astronomical bills for their own negligence! Any patient who suffers harm should not be left on the hook.

So kama kuna emergency na hio private hosi ndo iko karibu, itafute ma3 ikupeleke KNH sindio … alaf wtf is kanji?

Ata wewe unaendaga Casino kama @uwesmake kutibiwa magonjwa ya zinaa?

Whataboutism ndio inatumaliza. Have you considered the pain the entrepreneurs go through to set up such a business? How would the business operate if every Tom, Dick and Harry were allowed in under emergency care? Take Mukuru for example. Ikiwa jamaa zinajua zinaweza tokelezea Mater bila kuulizwa kitu, sii kila MTU ataland huko? If Kibera residents knew that an emergency can be accepted at Nairobi Hospital without pay, why would they bother with Kenyatta Hospital next door?
As for kanji, that is sueve for kanjo.

Peasant tulilalamika siku hizi ni hospitali ya general treatment. Ward tu ndio hakuna.

I like that bit of explanation, makes some sense What about the many quack private hospitals pale mitaani with inferior services but charging exhorbitant fee for trash treatment?
About the kanji, thats another one added to my library.

The full name is actually Gatina Kanungaga

Juzi bro yangu alikuwa na severe Pneumonia akalazwa pale Metropolitan Hospital for like a week. Bane…tulinyambishwa bill ya 400k bana. Afadhali tungeenda kenyatta hospital. Learned our lesson the hard way

Hio metropolitan nishawahi peleka a relative after an accident. Wakasema niwekelee deposit ya 100k before hata wamwangalie. They had already started talking of admission. Hivyo ndio nilikanyaga kubwa kubwa mpaka Kenyatta. Interestingly, huko KNH tulitumia less than 15k na jamaa akahudumiwa kama outpatient since his were only soft tissue injuries. Nilisema khandi tawe.

Boss you know when you put down the 100k Deposit they make heaven and earth meet hadi hiyo pesa iishe ndio wasi refund. You end up coughing afew more money to settle the bill. Government hospitals are way better esp KNH. Next time we have a big emergency we rather go to KNH.
