We seen K-talk despite the traffic struggling to squeeze a penny on it. Well, do you own a website? …even if not, how do you reckon a website can monetize its traffic in the kenyan context? What have you learnt with regard to owning a website?
Once you have the traffic getting money in a non-issue, its like opening a stall in bus station, or having a shop in the busy moi avenue, you will sell.
So for your website you cannot make decent money unless you getting like 500 or more people a day to your site. Also where the traffic is coming from really matters whether you will sell or not. Install google analytics to monitor this.
Now for monetization you have lots of options which include:
-
selling ad space to sponsors who want to sell to your traffic
-
adsense and other in-links where you are paid if someone clicks an ad on your site ( see the bottom of this site )

@Webdev ebu tuelezee why those pop-up websites loads faster than any other website…eg Jumia & alibaba
I’ve owned two sites before and I plan to own more. The first one collapsed despite having more than 2000 hits per day and I sold the second one. I’ll tell you why the first one collapsed.
It was a job search site ( http://career75.com/ ). That site gave me nightmares. Reason for failure was I did not do proper research and as a result the traffic was worthless. Most people who visited the site were direct visitors or referred from FB. Not through search (aka organic traffic). They visited with the intention of viewing posted jobs… and then they left. 90% was the worthless, POS opera mini. Meaning I had to pay attention to it. This browser will scull f*ck you if you aren’t careful.
Out of 1000 hits only ~ 3 clicks on ads. An abysmal CTR(click through rate). The CPC(cost per click) on the ads was so low (~10 cents). So out of 1000 people, I only got ~ 30 cents. What a waste of time!
Lastly, it got my AdSense account banned because Google thought I was buying traffic.
Lessons:
If you use AdSense…
Strive to get high quality traffic. While social media is your main marketing tool, make high quality content that will make you feature in search results. Note: Google no longer gives a rat’s ass about stuff that the user cannot see. Which means your meta description etc. will not increase your SERP ranking. If you have a high quality article on your site about How To Gamble Like a Pro, Google will give that priority over a topic in a forum with the same title but conversation was derailed into talking about video games.
The higher the quality of traffic, the higher the pay-out from ads.
Think about what kind of audience you want to target. If you know your audience you will know how to sell to them and also device different ways of selling to them.
Reach out to other sites with the same content and see you can do something together and share each other’s traffic.
Watch your analytics (analytics.google.com). A bounce rate of more than 80% means either your site is a steaming pile of shit or your content is misleading. If I search about cars and got directed to a site about toy cars, I’ll bounce immediately.
Patience.
On KTalk:
I suspect KTalk CTR is low and most of the traffic is direct. I have never once seen an ad that seems directed at me (I browse incognito). KTalk conversations are all over the place that once an ad server showed an ad about getting a girlfriend. So to KTalk, I am an almost useless hit. Because I post on occasion and exit like this.
What are you hiding?
Nothing. Am hiding from Google/FB profile building. I Google strange things and sometimes Google would show me ads relating to those strange things. So I decided to go incognito every time.
I’ve learnt something, have three useless websites bounce rate is at 60-78%. Never bothered to learn what it means because those are just portfolio websites.
