Our criminal/legal system is too lax. While this was maybe ok when people were better(read; under traditional legal systems), fewer and less hungry,
It’s untenable today.
To make matters worse we seem toothless against all levels of criminals. It’s not a matter of sophisticated criminals who are able to beat the system, no, it’s a free for all.
We also don’t seem to have many really unacceptable crimes. Our criminal/legal system lets people walk for everything. You probably know people who killed others and never saw the inside of a prison, I do. Rapists, warlords, gangsters, mobsters, scammers, are all free to do their thing.
Most times the crimes are ignored. When people actually get arrested the police, prosecutors, judges are either incompetent or available for purchase.
It’s not getting better though. Criminals are now in full control. First thing JSKS did when he came in was signal to criminals that he was their wildest dream come true & their patron saint. A rush of high profile cases dropped. High profile criminals got big appointments.
The problem as always is with our elites. They don’t know where to draw the lines.
Anyways, JSKS could do better by reducing the absolute numbers of criminals on the streets and crimes being committed.
Firms should be allowed to contract free labor from prisons then pay the govt a fee. That way, we could incentivize the govt through the court system to jail more criminals. Otherwise, they will be a net negative to the society/govt eating and sleeping through their sentences.
This will never change. It will be with us for the looong foreseeable future. Perhaps it is only the evolution of us, bonobos, that will save Kenya. When you ascend to power, not necessarily to the presidency, your first priority is to do things that will ensure the safest environment for your own, your family’s and/or your friends’ mischiefs. No. We feed, cloth and hospitalize criminals when their health is at risk. In addition to working, this program can impart skills. Usually, repeat offenders lack any employable skills.
