A Member of Parliament and MCA from Magarini drank dirty water on Wednesday, August 3, in a show of support for residents facing hunger due to drought.
Magarini MP Harrison Kombe and Marafa MCA Renson Kambi drank water fetched from pans that are the only remaining sources in Mulunguni village, all in full glare of cameras.
According to a report by the Star, residents said domestic animals also drink from the same pan.
Drama took centre stage when a resident who was speaking on behalf of others asked for the dirty water to support his claims on their suffering.
A bottle of muddy water was then placed at the table where the dignitaries were seated.
An usher had been distributing bottles of mineral water to guests during the gathering that also had Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri in attendance.
Kambi, according to the paper, rejected the mineral water saying he would rather drink the dirty water. During his address, the MP dared him to drink the water to show his seriousness.
He accepted the challenge and drank from the bottle before passing it to Kombe who took two sips.
“This water is good. It does not harm anyone but if somebody from elsewhere tries this he will have a bout of diarrhoea,” said Kombe.
Magarini is located near River Sabaki but is one of several areas worst hit by famine and lack of water.
Kombe added that he had helped push for two key projects worth about Sh200 million to boost water supply.
CS Kiunjuri said he will vouch for the residents to access to clean drinking water.
