Was Jesus the first person to cast out demons?

Actually He was. When the Jews saw Jesus cast out demons they immediately knew that He was the Messiah, son of David. A key Messianic sign was the ability that Jesus had to rescue humanity from the bondage of supernatural terror. Demons come in many forms including ailments. If you had asked an ancient Israelite to describe to you where demons came from, they would’ve said they are the spirits of the dead Nephilim (Genesis 6) and they would be right. The Israelites believed that David had some supernatural ability over demons (read Psalms 91) and held on to a promise that one day a descendant of David (Messiah) would have complete dominion over evil spirits. If you’re a son of David by virtue of being a Christian then you must also exorcise demons with the sword of God. It is a key part of your daily Christian walk.

Why should we care?

Because there’s a raging war going on which we (humanity) are conscripts, like it or not. The Muslims call it ji’had, a holy war, where the enemy is any man, woman or child unbeliever of Islam. Their number one enemy is a kaffir. We Christians are not at war with actual people in the flesh, but the power of darkness behind that flesh. We do not kill non-Christians with a sword of iron like the Muslims do; but ‘jihad’ for Christians is of a supernatural kind, slaying demons with the sword of the Word.
As for the Jews, they hoped the long awaited Messiah was going to be like a Mahdi (a military ruler) who would topple the Romans with a sword and install a Jewish “caliphate” in Israel. Which is why they preferred Barabbas. But Jesus was nothing like they envisioned because He (God of the universe) had leveled up the war from the physical to the unseen realm. The Jews couldn’t understand this and so they were sorely disappointed that they would continue living under Roman occupation. But sentencing Jesus to death only took the war even deeper into the unseen realm. The death of Jesus Christ gave his Spirit carriage into the underworld of hell, where Death lived. If Satan knew that Jesus was planning to die for humanity, satan would’ve instructed Death not to take Him and so Christ would’ve remained crucified but undead. (1 Corinthians 2:8) @Stormtrooper98
Jews did not understand this, but the plan of God was to grant every believer in Him the authority to continue waging this unseen war in the earthly realm. A born again Jew could live free from demonic oppression even as his body was imprisoned by Romans. You see down through the ages the revelation of God and what this whole life is about has been revealed in bits and pieces like a puzzle. There’s a distinct shift from the Old to the New Testament because the battle ground is radically different than before.
