A diesel generator of this capacity lasts 25 years. As good responsible Kenyans, we can only assume that they were bought in 1998 and have been the sole source of power for the airport, or at least a part of it since 1998.

So instead of changing the “automatic change over switch” that failed to automatically start the generators, they decided to replace the german made generators with cheap chinese ones?

The generation of electricity from diesel engines does not work by simply switching the “change over switch”. The electricity demand load at JKIA is quite high that a single generator cannot meet it. Two or more generators have to be SYNCHRONISED to meet the demand. The problems usually come from synchronizing the power from the generators.
