EABL Relief as Government Grants Tax Exemption on Select Beer
written by Biasharadigest January 17, 2020
Relief has dawned on East African Breweries Limited (EABL) after the government exempted excise tax on alcohol made from sorghum, millet and cassava by 95%.
This comes at a strategic time as the company’s KSh15 billion Kisumu plant was commissioned only two years ago. The plant will be solely dedicated to brewing of Senator Keg from sorghum.
According to Treasury CS, Ukur Yattani, EABL will be liable for refunds for any of the additional excise taxes it paid on its Senator beer from when the regulation was passed in July last year, upto 18th December 2019.
Therefore, beer prices for the select brand will come down and presumably lead to more sales.
EABL, is a Kenyan-based holding company that manufactures branded beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages. The group’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, with subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
The group also has distribution partners in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
